Anyone travelling throgh Pakistan?
I'm planning on riding from London-New Zealand early next year & would really appreciate some feed back on whether travelling via Iran-Pakistan-India is still viable.
It appears to me that the borders are open but does anyone know if it's safe to travel through Pakistan these days? If anyone has travelled this route recenently I would appreciate your input. Failing that - any suggestions of alternative routes... |
There's been quite a lot of posts on this. I'm leaving with Spud from Venice on 7 May, and 3 guys are leaving around same time from London to overland Pakistan-India as well. We've heard from quite a few people who have done this in past 2 months or so and they all reported friendly locals and no problems whatsoever at the borders. Whether it is safe is subjective and its your call, I personally think it is but some would disagree. One thing is for sure - if you are leaving next year any events that happen now will probably have no bearing at all on what happends then, you'll just have wait until shortly before your departure.

Sorry - am new to this site and didn't realise how much this has been discussed already in different forums. Have had a good read through the site today - absolutely brilliant!
Looking forward to hearing of your experiences/advice. Have a great trip http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/smile.gif |
Travelling from Hanoi to Paris, we were in Pakistan 2 weeks ago and people were very very welcoming, especially in Balouchistan. Borders weren't a problem, but since the recent departure of Pakistan high Commisionner from New Delhi, things may change. Western media are definitely biaised concerning pakistan and Iran. The only thing I can say is that Iran drivers have got a very personnal way of driving!

I have been in Pakistan since 20th May. It is very friendly and hospitaple, also very beautiful.
I can completely endorse Mathieu's view that this place is totally mis-represented by the western media. If you plan to visit the northern areas be careful and make sure you do your research. See the posts on Karakoram on the Advisory & Safety Board: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb...ML/000109.html And on the India/Pak border (although this may change by the time you get here): http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb...ML/000114.html Have fun, maybe catch you on the way past.... If any one is going to Larkana (the best place to stay for a trip to Moedojaro) then give me a message; I have a chain and sprocket set there that I would dearly love to have sent on to me.

We're currently in Quetta, about 50 or so K's from the afghan border and are having no problem with the Pakistanis, quite the opposite in fact.
To suggest the FCO's advice re staying away is misrepresentation is a massive understatement. We have been in frequent contact with people living and travelling through Pakistan and without exception their view is pure astonishment at the medias portrayal at what is,in reality, a slight rise in the 47 year old tensions. More importantly the curry hear is to die for. Goose www.gooseontheloose.com |

Hi all,
Spend the past month hopping all over the place (Pakistan) and like most off you say: It's safe. BUT! Keep your eyes and your ears open, ask locals for advice about your route and don't do things you would not do in New York in the middle of the night. I had a few nasty encounters with "hostile" people... Don't ask me why, but some people have a deep deep hate against foreneirs. I did hear a story about (if I remember correct) Murree were about 100 man from the town went out to fight against the american's in Afganistan... only 5 came back. I was in this town and did not notice anything, but heared a few "horror-story's" later. Usually when it is not 100 % safe, the police will turn up in your hotel and lave a guard. So... Enjoy Pakistan and it's 99,999% friendly people, just keep your eyes open. Safe travels. Maarten ------------------ - www.maartensworld.tmfweb.nl - - Some photo's - |
