Azerbaijan transit visa in Turkey, Georgia

Hey guys, I would like to ask about possibility of applying for AZ visa in some cities of Turkey or Georgia.

I'm travelling to Iran and I would like to take it through Azerbeijan. I wanted to arrange my visa before trip, but due to iranian elections it's not possible for me and I have to do it on the way.

Do you have experience with arranging transit visa in Batumi/Tbilisi or some Turkey city? How much time did it take? Did you send dokuments in advance to embassy or did you do everything on the place?

Thank you very much for your advices, it's quite complication for me, so I would appriciate any advice. Katarina

Hi Katarina,
There is good information here but I did read somewhere that the consulate in Batumi, Georgia, issues them without an loi so that is where I will try and get mine. Alternatively Tiblisi seems a good place but you need an loi and the X-tour agency can provide one at a price.
I think I read about Batumi on the LP website which is under maintainance again at the moment.

I was able to obtain a visa in Istanbul without issue. It was a pretty straightforward affair, we went to the consulate, applied, got a slip of paper, went to the bank up the street and paid cash into that account, got a receipt which we brought back to the consulate...we were then told to come back at 5pm (it was noon at this point) and that our visas would be ready. We came back at 5pm and had them in hand. All in all it was much easier than we had expected.

Can you give a little more information, type of visa, for how long, date specific, when was this and did you need an LOI? I am in Istanbul at the moment and would like to get one here but the information here seems slightly contradictory.

Iran visa - go to Trabzon

Hi Katharina!

Considering to Iran Visa I suggested the Trabzon Consulate in Turkey. I've been there last year and it was the excat same procedure like mentioned before in Istanbul. But I guess jpyrek, you were talking about Azerb.-consulate?

So far I can really recommend the consulate in Iranian Trabzon, altough they are propably restricted right now, as well considering the election.

Take care

Alex

Sorry I haven't been on the site in a while... I HOPE that you've gotten stuff sorted out by now.

To answer your questions. We ended up getting TOURIST visas, because the Transit visas were from date of issue, which at 5 days was ridiculous. Also, we were doing the ferry from Baku, so we didn't really think that woudl be enough anyway. We found LOIs for $25 each online (from where, i forget). It was a 30 or 31 day visa...from date of issue. This was back in 2009. However, I talked to people who went through literally the exact same process as recently as last August. THere are a few groups I know that'll be heading though Istanbul and some will be trying this same thing. I should be able to get info from them in the next week or so. In 2009, the cost of transit and toursit visa was the same. The difference was the need of an LOI. So, essentially $25 got you an additional 26 days. Information for all visas is pretty contradictory and varies from consulate to consulate, country to country.

Last summer we found that Sudanese visa costs for US citizens were over $200 in the US, over $300 in the UK, and only $50 in Egypt. The necessary documents were also different at each consulate. Even within Egypt, we were told by one consulate that they weren't allowed to issue us visas, but the other one allowed it. Lots of contradictory information.

The length of your visa is pretty irrelevant if you are entering by vehicle. Unless you are prepared to leave a large cash deposit at the border, a vehicle may only stay in Azerbaijan for 72 hours (though reportedly overstaying is not a major issue).

I got a 5 day transit visa from the embassy in Tehran for $20, no other requirements. It was valid for 30 days from the date of issue. This was in March 2010.

Tbiilisi Georgia

I got mine in Tbilisi. It took a week.

What is you nationality? That will effect the cost. It was $160 for 1 month tourist visa for Americans.
