Bullet tips, mountain riding
I've just bought a secondhand Bullet in Delhi and have made it up to Uttaranchal -- christ the big Indian roads are hair-raising.
Anyhow, I'm concerned about the pathetic front brake on the Enfield (350cc Standard), and negotiating steep downhill hairpins. The back brake's a little better and I guess I'll have to use the gears liberally. (Although I must say I don't find the 2nd gear very tight.) If anyone has any advice on either improving the front brake or on riding technique for these situations I'd be most grateful. |
Hi Ade,
I was also horrified by the front brake when I bought an old Enfield this year, so had the new disc brake kit fitted. By Indian standards, it's very expensive (upwards of 6000 Rs, or 120 dollars) but it makes an enormous difference! I was much happier and more confident with it. For steep downhill mountain roads, I just go very slowly! Have fun in India. James P.S. Better not to duplicate posts in different forums... |
Yeah, front brake is a joke.
Met one guy that had made up a new brake arm - the part that goes from brake cable to the spindle on the drum brake. He made it an inch longer which gave more mechanical leverage & seemed to help. Sort of.... Buy yourself the loudest horn you can find! My advice - head for the hills - less traffic, great riding, stunning views & people shanti |
