Central Asia Borders

Has anyone heard anything about borders to Central Asian countries (Kazakstan, Kyrgystan etc.) being closed due to SARS?
I met a biker here in Ulan Ude Russia who said he couldn't cross into them because of SARS. Granted this was more than a month ago...

Quite a few details on the Lonely Planet web site Thorn Tree pages. Seems to be Turkmenistan and the crossings with China. I hope to be going there soon.
