Crossing into Bangladesh from Meghalaya, India
Hey all! we are currently in Guhawati, Assam, India contemplating cutting across bangladesh to Kolkata. It seems that no permit is required for Meghalaya, yay but I'm having trouble determining if we can cross at Dawki / Tamabil. Also if we can get a visa at the border? If anyone has any current or even outdated information that be greatly appreciated!

Also...there are some overland rumblings of some sort of extra crazy expensive deposit required for Bangladesh in the past year or so? Cant find any info more current than july...This had something to do with some brits smuggling luxury cars & trying to sell them without paying the taxes.

The crossing is open. Visa is defiantly not possible at border. There is no consulate in Guwahti, I'm not sure about Shillong. Do stop at Cherapunjee in Meghalaya and go stay at the village of Nongriat (about a 1.5-2 hour hike from the road) where the double decker root bridge is. To me, its the prettiest place in all of India. |
Double decker root bridge?! I'm there.

Seriously! We are doing the hike tomorrow, at cherrapunji now. This area is stunning and the riding was fantastic (apart from road construction). Decided to nix Bangladesh, play in Meghalaya a little and head back through siliguri, west bengal. We are going to Delhi anyway and I don't think our carnet cOvers Bangladesh...whoops! It might be crossed off due to that recent crazy expensive deposit...
Seriously thanks for the info, lovely here! |
That was really awesome, we did the long hike to the crazy brigh blue swimming holes in the river. The bridges & villages were just lovely with such friendly people. Crawled thru mawsmai cave too. Highly recommend this area, all kinds of views and waterfalls. Perfect place for day hikes and exploration. Again many thanks for the recommendation!
Now heading to Bhutan..ouch! |

No never found out the official word. CAA or the equivalent carnet guarantor should have the latest info I imagine.
I'm glad we went north instead despite the expense. There was some rioting in Dhaka at the time. Bhutan was amazing. |
