India to Thailand on Enfield?
 

Hello all,

Looking at purchasing an Enfield in Dehli in January 2017, spending a month in India, then heading over to Thailand.

Obviously this means crossing Myanmar. If I was able to find a group tour that was crossing overland, would they accept an Indian registered Enfield?

Would they also allow the bike into Thailand, with the intention of heading into Laos?

Are there any restrictions bringing Indian Royal Enfield into either Myanmar or Thailand?

I asked the same question a few months ago and was told a carnet was needed and a non-Indian will not get one for an Indian registered bike. Hopefully someone will have a solution which I would also be interested in.

I can't give you definite answers, but I DO KNOW that it's very difficult to cross Thai and Myanmar borders with your own bike - but very easy to rent bikes for extended periods in both countries. Consider selling the Enfield at the border, renting and then return the rental at the other border (may cost a bit extra to swing this), then repeat in Thailand.

Options. I don't know for sure.

Ok thanks for your input. Im planning on doing the trip with Burma Senses overland tour company. I emailed them, and they said taking an Indian registered Royal Enfield into and out of the country is fine.

If you want to do it legal with a carnet, then you go to Nepal and buy the Enfield there --- Nepal is the only country where you can organise a carnet ( without returning to your home country )

Enfields are 30 to 60% more expensive in Nepal than India.

Not sure where you've heard this, but it is not correct. You can arrange a Carnet for a Nepali bike, but you will have to do this in your home country, with your national CDP agency, eg. for UK nationals it would be the AA. you cannot get a Nepali Carnet. It is also necessary to have the bike registered in your own name, which is a time consuming and far from straightforward process, however it is possible, I know because I've done it !!

What is the policy for a foreign registered bike besides the carnet anyways? :blushing:

Unless things are different for bikes than cars, you will/may need to establish legal residency (by shonky methods) in India before registering a bike in your name and even then you may have to cross a few palms with rupees, but I guess that tour mob have explained all that. If they haven't, they need to before you dig yourself in too deep.
