Iran: End of cheap fuel
 

Jalal of Jalal Guesthouse, Kerman, told us that in little more than two weeks the prices for fuel in Iran will rise sharply: From 800 Rial to then 6000 Rial (approx 65 US-cent) per litre.

Apparently, locals still get a certain allowance of fuel per verhicle and car for the old price on ration coupons, but that probably won't help travellers.

We heard the rumour several times in different places, so it might be true. Take extra cash.

There is an Iranian friend with me just on my shoulder now and he told that, that is a long discussion in parliament and he thinks that there is still time to get the final apporoval. However, the price will increase not sharply, but, increases gradually for everyone including Iranian poeple.

So, hurry up people:)

Having just left Iran I can report that I have paid 800 IR/litre, the same as in December. It seems that the Iranian govt. has decided not to commit political suicide at this time. The economy is bad and a fuel price increase would make it worse.

What seems strange is that they have built a tar road around the Mirjaveh border crossing leading into the desert, where pickups can illegally cross the border with smuggled petrol. These pickups, often without licence plates, pass all Pak checkpoints without problems and proceed until Quetta. The Iranian govt. builds a road to smuggle subsidised petrol out of the country, which it has to import? Strange...

we are 3 motorcyclist from switzerland visiting iran at the moment. I write this post from esfahan.

Iran has intoduced a petrol card. every iranian registred car has the right to get one of these cards. at the moment there is no limit on it and petrol has to be paid in cash. we have been told that this will change in the future (next 3 months) and people have to go to the bank to upload their card with money.

until now there was no problem to get any petrol. people are so friendly and helpful that you always will find someone at the station who will give you the right to use his card. oftenly even the guys at the pump has a card for use.

price is 1000 rial the liter for normal petrol.

by the way. Iran still forbids bikes bigger than 250cc. but as tourist normaly have a carnet de passage and therefore bring their bikes out of the country, customs allowed us to bring our bikes into iran.

So, er, the petrol rationing has come into place overnight and the BBC are reporting scuffles in Tehran. Details are still sketchy (to me, at least) and it is not clear how the apparent limit of 100 litres per month might effect visiting travellers. Will petrol still be widely available but at a more Western price?

Anyone in Iran able to give a clearer idea of what's happening?

As for the future - well you need the crystal ball for that; all Governments will do complete about faces when it suits them to do so.

Burning the odd petrol station is one thing, but watch out for the refining capacity of Iran going skyward - it's their weakness.

i have just seen the news on the Turkish newspaper

It has been reported that after 100lt of petrol, people can still buy petrol but have to pay 4 times morethen the normal price.

It's the cheapest fuel I've ever put into the tank :)

Quality is horrible, but it keeps you going... And I reckon it's not worth the new high price per it's quality, too :P
