Iraq to Turkey
Hi there,
I´m going to Erbil/Iraq in March/April and would like to travel to Turkey after that by minibus. Does anyone have some up-to-date information about the current situation there? Thanks for your advice :) |
As of October 2014, Iraqi Kurdistan (i.e. the governorates of Erbil, Dohuk, Sulaymaniyah and Halabja) felt very secure, though there was a bomb attack in Erbil in Erbil a couple of weeks after I left. But this is an exception in agenerally very tranquil and welcoming place.
There are areas beyond the borders of the KRG proper (e.g. Kirkuk) which are still controlled by the Peshmerga (Kurds), but are not Kurdistan and not quite as secure. I found these areas far more interesting (culturally) than Kurdistan proper, though one needs a better understanding of the security situation to make a balanced decision on whether to visit or not. As for Kurdistan proper, I see no reason at present not to visit. I summarised my experiences in this post (Reply #9): http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...ast/iraq-77733 EO |
Isn't Mosul run by IS since one year? So how would you go to Erbil from Turkey?
I can't imagen that it is possible actually... |

There are at least two roads from Erbil to the Turkish border at Ibrahim Khalil, just north of Zakho. |
Take the plane
There are planes from Erbil and Suleymaniye to Istanbul and many other towns. I would reccomend to take the plane in and out as the best option.
