Laos Docs
Just uploaded some scans of the docs you need / get going into Laos.
Take a look at http://www.gt-rider.com/docsgallery/FrameSet.htm if you think it will be a help. |
Tai bike or other registration?
Hi, was that a Thai registered bike? Where from? If I may ask.
Thanks |
Laos Riding Tips
Remember to keep your headlights off in Laos, unless its night or foggy.
Do not forget to visit Luang Prabang, which is a World Heritage City, and sits on the banks of the Mekong River. There is a cool "motorcycle only" bridge on the way out of town, going North. You have to cut east for a couple of blocks and then go north to cross it. You can rent Honda Baja XR 250s for $20 per day out of Vientianne. There are a couple of places, but Fuarks is the best. http://motoquest.smugmug.com/Destina..._PRhBE-M-8.jpg |
I rode several times in Laos, always with my lights on. Even when the cops stopped me, because I rode the wrong way up a one-way road (no sign) they didn't hassle me about my light. AFAIK headlights off only applies in Cambodia.
I have never been asked to acquire any docs for my bike. Once I volunteered to buy insurance and once a laissez passer, for which I had to pay. I think the only one important is insurance. |
Agree Fuarks is the best place to hire bikes.
I crossed from Stung Treng, north Cambodia into Laos in November '09 on my own motorcycle. I was told by immigration that the customs building was 4km up the road. Despite asking several people and riding up and down the stretch a few times I was unable to locate it. With light running out (having come from Phnom Penh) I continued on to Tad Lo without the bike having been stamped in... Fortunately when exiting from Laos into the north of Thailand, after receiving the immigration exit stamp from the centre of Houei Xai, my bike was lifted into a canoe and taken across the river into Thailand, having never been inspected by customs. No problems once on the Thai side. I was in Laos just over 2 weeks & was never asked for any documents even though the roads were overflowing with police & military due to the SEA Games. Regarding head lights in Laos, apparently these must be off during the day in Cambodia also. After 3000km in 2 weeks through Cambodia, I was 'fined' 1USD by a police & military random roadside stop about 40km south of the Lao border. The ticket / receipt issued in triplicate looked reasonably legit. |
