Nepal motorbike restrictions
 

Got just a message from tibetan friends living in Pokhara that Nepal government bans all big cc motorbikes from the road and fuel is a real problem now due to Maoist/India situation.
So check it out before you ship your bike to KTM, or want to ship out of KTM to BKK.

Better email your rental company and ask if 500cc is banned too. Me personal I prefer the 350 cc., even with two up no problem in mountains and better fuel economy. 30km /liter.
Nepal is nice but political situation not very stable.
The availabillity of fuel, petrol and diesel is allready a few years more or less a problem and but now a lot more, my friends mailed.

This is nothing unusual, petrol shortages are fairly common in Nepal, and can last up to a week. We got caught in one last July, but, luckily had enough to get to Butwal and then nipped over the border and tanked up in Saunali. Best advice is to keep your tank full.

I noticed queues of more than 50 bikes at a number of petrol stations in Kathmandu, on various days of the week, back in May this year.

There are lots of locals riding the 500cc REs, so I can't imagine a ban, any ban, would last for very long.

I would just take the flight and see how things work out, on the ground, on the day; this is all part of the appeal of visiting such countries.
If there really is a ban on "big" bikes (that can be successfully imposed) then hire a small one :thumbup1:

no fuel shortages here in pokhara, refuelled this morning no queues. Asked a few people and they'd not heard of anything strange.

nepalese chap rode over from Kathmandu on his 1000cc Aprilla sports bike a couple of days ago.

Rumours spread like wild fire. Was talk of indian plated vehicles not being allowed in, but seen many indian plated bikes getting through the border in the last week.

I can confirm Fern's posting - no problems here with big bikes and nothing about a ban or fuel shortage in the newspapers....

We are currently travelling with 2 big bikes in Nepal (650 and 1150 cc) - and we didn't have any problems!

Been riding Nepal from November 3rd to November 12th with no problems, fuel was largely available anywhere on the route Kathmandu-Pokhara-Bandipur-Chitwan-Kathmandu.

We just left Nepal after a month, rode the whole way west to east and up to Kathmandu, last resort, & back down. No problems at all. Borders & carnet smooth, east west highway is very good. Some stations had no petrol but there are plenty that do. Police are more interested in trucks, they wave all bikes on by...
