Northeast India, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland permit information
 

Does anyone have recent experience of visiting these states as a foreigner and have up to date information on the permits required?
I have searched on-line and everything I found implies that you need to book a tour for this part of India but is that the case or is independent travel allowed with the right permits, if so any information about getting them?

Its 12 yrs since i was in Assam so i cannot offer you any accurate advice. Back then Guwahati in Assam was the main Government hub for onward travel to the tribal areas and although permits were required independent travel was OK.If you can do some digging around on the Govt of India web you may find something.

AFAIK only Arunachal Pradesh still requires a permit and travel agent.

I believe that for Manipur and Nagaland you either no longer need a permit, or it is a formality which can be done on the spot with no assistance.

For certain, Meghalaya requires no permits.

Hopefully someone can share experience on getting the permits to Manipur and Nagaland.
