SE.Asia..Looking for the best country to leave the bike for a while..
Hello,
Big hello from İstanbul-Turkey and sorry if this is not the right place for my question.. One of my best friends and his wife are currently in Thailand and heading to Malaysia after west and south asia..They have to make a break, park the bike in SE.asia and fly back to Turkey for a couple of months... Is it possible to leave the bike in a SE Asia country, fly home without the bike, fly back a few months later to get the bike to continue the trip.. So could you please recommend where its possible and easy to leave the bike for a while.. Thanks in advance and wish you all happy, safe and lucky trips... |
Hi Mehmet
Thailand would be OK, there is a fine you have to pay for bike overstay but it is set at maximum 2000baht for 6 months. This means, you can leave the bike there for up to 6 months and the most you will pay is 2,000B All the expats that live there with foreign bikes do the visa run that way. Cheers TS |
Hi Mehmet,
Ask them to check with Sunny cycle in KL. There were many bikes from overlanders there. |
Hi Mehmet
Is it Hakan & Sandan who wants to temporarily store their bike in SE Asia? Malaysia is possible. I stored my bike there for a while last year. But it is a carnet country, which means that technically you cannot leave a temporarily imported vehicle in a country while the importer is out of the country. Malaysia also imposes a time limit of three months (extendable to 12 months) - LINK. Cambodia: just like Thailand (and Laos), Cambodia is not a carnet country. The Cambodian Customs Authorities are a bit 'hit-and-miss', to the point that even they probably don’t know what their own importation rules are! I have my Transalp stored in Phnom Penh right now. I will be going back there on 25th October to pick-up on my ride – destination will be Kathmandu, Nepal, before the end of the year. I have a couple of biker contacts in Phnom Penh. With this in mind, if your friends want to consider that city for storage purposes, then please do not hesitate to send me a PM or an e-mail if you need more information. I hope it is Hakan & Sandan we are talking about here .. and that they will be returning to the SE Asian region around October/November time. It would be really great to meet them. All the best Keith |

Problem is CDP exceeds on 25.October and Turkish touring automobile club accepts to extend once for maximum 3 more months..Possible will be able to extend it for 1 more year with extra deposits here..waiting for the written reply from the club..Currently they are around floating market and will move to malaysia next week..they are planning to leave the bike in Malaysia or Thailand according to the paperwork and cost...so will also need a safe place..Sure they will also be very happy to meet you in person.. |
