Spares for DR650SE in Thailand?
 

I'd been informed that it would be easy enough to get spare parts for a DR650SE in Bangkok but now I'm here, I'm finding that might not actually be the case and anything would need to be specially ordered in- is that the case or does anyone know any different??

As I'm heading to North Thailand and Laos next, I'll be back in Bangkok in a few weeks time before shipping the bike to Nepal. After that its India, Pak and Iran etc so ideally I'd really like to get some parts sorted out here if I possibly can.

Seemed to me like they would order original parts from somewhere (maybe Singapore?) You could find stuff like oil filters very cheap, but I dont know of their quality, they might actually come from the same factory as originals, or they might not...

There seemed to be a couple of big bike shops near Sukhumvit Road in Pattaya, maybe its worth asking there?

Or maybe post this at gt-rider dot com forums, I think there they will know exactly, if you can get parts somewhere without ordering. Bangkok is big, so I wouldnt be surprised, if that is possible.. even though there arent too many big bikes around (but surely much more than in India or Pakistan anyway!!)

dirt shop i am guessing is the best choice. cant remember the addy, but ask around. you can also look in the phone book believe it or not. we did.

there is a"motorcycle" section near lumpini, where i had parts sent from JPN for my KDX. good folks good price, and a real hole in the wall. not what i expected from them. no name, no signs, just alot on mX crap outside. and fish tanks inside.

Will be back in B'kok in a few weeks time but my plan is to get some bits and pieces sent up there from Australia. I was basically told that I wouldn't get any parts for the DR there but they could order stuff in from Singapore which was take a bit of time. In fact one place only got their stuff direct from Japan and that would be on back order.

Will see how the delivery (just some oil filters & brake pads) from Oz goes as i reckon thats my best bet. I did find a place that does Metzler Enduro tires in B'kok so I'll be replacing my rapidly balding front but have no idea how I'd carry a spare rear on the DR till I need it!

Yes, we carried spare tyres on the DL650, on crashbars that had some extra weldings to hold them. But I would think on the DR650 would be nearly impossible to keep them there, theres just not enough room, and its front tyre is 21, whereas the DL´s got 19 inch, so it will need even more space.

It was a good place to keep them, considering weight distribution and all, the only drawback was that you needed to make sure theyre at precisely the right position on both sides, otherwise they´ll interfere with steering, which is not good. When they were in correct position, they only touched the front wheel at handlebar turned to extreme right/left, so that did not really matter.

But I dont think many 1-cylinder offroad-bikes can carry tyres where the DL could (just barely).

Get two sets of brake pads .. bolt the spare set to the bash plate - room on the right side - place them so if the bash plate bends they won't be the first things to hit the engine cases.

Tyres on the DR ... well if you look at 'overland solutions' rear racks you'll see they are designed to carry spare tyres ..

Weight on to the front on the DR .. use 'tank panniers' - made from two small backpacks - sling them over the fuel tank and tie the straps togeher on top of the tank. You will need to run a bunge cord at the front from the ower corners to stop them flapping at speed.
