Spiti Beginner Bike trip Advice needed
Hi All,
Anyone with advice would be greatly appreciated. My girlfirend and I are going on a two bike trip up Rohtang pass in Spiti in India. We will be travelling to most of the monasteries, but we are first time bikers and have never doen anything like this. I am South African and she is Indian from Bombay. We are renting bikes through Incredible Spiti and am still awaiting confirmation on papers and passes we would apparently need in order to travel this route. Just one catch: Neither of us have a bike license but we know how to ride bikes atleast. I would be riding an Enfield (although many people on here warn against this) and she will be riding something lighter such as a yamaha rd 350 (I believe thats what it is?). Any advice on which road or pass to take perhaps and what obstacles to look out for, legal & natural? Also what would any of you suggest to pack or important things one might need on a trip like this? At first I thought we are making a mistake to do it like this, but then I realized adventures like this is where one learns so we will just be throwing ourselves in there. We will be going from the 17th of September. Thank you all in advance so long!! Lucian |
Lucian,
You will not be the first doing the trip you plan. Thousands have done that trip before. That's good, so the motorbike dealer in Karol Bagth are well prepared to provide you with all you need. I have done it twice, last time three weeks ago with my wife. Here is my advice: Get the bikes from Lalli Singh only. Contact him in advance. Don't worry about the driving licence. No one ever asked for one. Take two identical Enfields so you can swap spares. Enjoy the ride of your life time. |
Things may have changed, but when I last did this 2012, if the bike is not registered in Himachal Pradesh you will need an NOC from the sub magistrate in Manali town. They used to insist on this before allowing you onto the Rohtang !

All I needed is the Inner Line Permit for Kinnaur which is available for download at the Facebook site of Wauschi Schiwau.

By the way, my wife and me will be in Delhi around 20th Sept. giving away all Enfield spares, tools, clothing and even helmets we used on our two months trip.

Wauschi,
Thank you for your advice and will definitely give it a go! I have not been able to watch this thread recently and have in the meantime opted to use a taxi between some of the villages but will be trekking here and there. Unfortunately we will be on the trek by the 20th so will miss the great opportunity you've mentioned above. Thank you and have a great rest of your trip! Regards Lucian |
