Travelling Southeast-Asia with Thai-Bike
We're intersted in buying a registered motorbike in Thailand, but only, if we can travel with it to other countries as well! Could you tell us if we can go with a Thai bike into Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia (or even Indonesia?!) with no or little problems?
Would be very grateful for an answear, Sannbak |
If you have not already viewed this site I would recommend that you do.It covers a lot of the information your looking for.I am planning a trip to Chiang Mai later this year or early next.Hope to explore some off road trail riding as well as the amazing road networks in the Golden Triangle.

Hi Duncan,
thanks a lot for your mail, the gt-rider.com was very informative indeed! If you're interested in the experiences we made in Laos, just have a look at the message board there. Have a lot of fun on your trip! Bye Susi |
As far as I am aware foreigners are not allowed to purchase bikes/cars/property etc in Thailand. The only way round this is by a Thai national owning the bike[if you know one well enough to trust]. To confirm this e mail David Unkovitch at the Golden Triangle rider site.
Also if you rent a bike you cannot enter Laos, Cambodia or Vietnam with it. Joyce |
A thai bike can be registered now by a foreigner on a tourist visa, so any one that can get a letter from your embassy verifing your address in Thailand can register a bike in your own name. But the choice here is rather limited for anything other than sports bikes, so be prepared to spend some time if you want a specific model.
