UK-India. Ship bike back?
Hi
Just wondered if anyone's done this to save'time'? Overland to India then fly back while bike takes the slow boat..thus satisfying own travel lust and keeping clients happy. Maybe a trip lasting 3 months... Or do I rent the house out and set off for 12months? Sod the work. |

Can you ship / fly back from anywhere else ..More southerly location? I'll check out the links from this site.... Simon |
Simon,
You can fly the bike back from Delhi or Mumbai, but it's likely to be expensive. Story Leavesley stayed with us while he arranged flying his bike from Delhi to Istanbul last month and he had real trouble finding a carrier to take the bike. The Indian authorities are nervous about terrorist action and, as bikes are classed as dangerous goods, many of the airlines are refusing to take them at the moment. From memory, he ended up with a choice of BA, Lufthansa or Royal Jordanian and none of them were cheap (about £2/kg to Istanbul with BA). I think this is because there's a lot of trade between India and the UK, so airfreight space is sold at a premium. Shipping the bike is considerably cheaper, but it takes a reasonable time and port charges in the UK can be hefty. Have a search on the shipping page - I think a couple of people have shipped back to Europe for as little as US$450. If Chris' quote from Kathmandu proves genuine, it's probably the best way to get your bike back. There's just the small matter of fighting your way through the Maoist blockade to get to the airport.... Hope that helps, Harvey ------------------ no pipe, no slippers www.chasingthesun.org [This message has been edited by harvey (edited 24 August 2004).] |
hi
we shall be flying home oct/nov we will let you know how thing get on chris |
I flew my bike back from Bombay in 1997 and i can't recommend that, it's very expensive, took me 7 full days to get the bike into custom and than i waited for 6 days in Europe for the bike! The Cargo for the airfreight and the custom office you have to go is about 25km set appart from eachother, and you would have to go right through the city! You need abuot 40 signatures from differrent people, it's a big hassle!
I would send it from Kathmandu! But time goes and things are changing, but remember "India is slow"! Good luck Appie! |
Hi, when I flogged an Enfield to a dealer in Delhi they tried quiet hard to sell me an RD350 fully refurbed and said that they could ship it to england for twohundred pounds. They were in the Karol Bagh area but I can't remember the name, sorry.

Hi Simon,
I shipped my AT out of Goa earlier this year and know the name of an unusually efficient shipping agent there. Cost me £400. There were a load of charges when the bike arrived (£400 quids worth, including delivery) which a mate paid for me before I had the chance to object! Let me know if you'd like some more info on the shipping agent. Pete |
Hi Pete i am planning to ship my bike from GOA to Addis Ababa Ethiopia and the address of the agent would be of great help .. thansk i also ride an AT .... cheers Mauro Quote:
