How does the Dr650 measure up?
 

I'm in the beginning stages of planning a trip through Middle and South America. I've been reading alot of the posts here and elsewhere and have a couple questions. I'm 6ft 200lbs. From what I've read on the KLR, it sounds like a great bike, but asside from the standard touring extras, it requires certain KLR specific upgrades and mods. (Brakes, Fork Springs, Rear Shock, idler shaft lever and spring, sub-frame upgrade, new pegs) In terms of durability, engine reliability + performance, and ease of maintenance during the trip, how does the stock DR650, measure up to the performance of a KLR after those mods have been made. Will I need to make the same type of mods to the DR? I understand that the DR will need a larger tank, and better seat, but how's the rest of the bike? Any information or opinions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Dunno anything about the KLR, but had a DR in the past and loved it to the bits!Very good bike...

You definitely need a better seat, doubt you need a bigger tank though. If you're doing long distances I'd think about a good screen! Can't really think of anything else...

Can directly compare KLR A and C with DR650SE:
The KLR has some weak spots but they are minor and can be fixed. Besides that a strong and very reliable bike.
The DR is of different build in general: More sporty, lighter, nicer. I never had one of my DR's heavily loaded but with one person and luggage they do very fine and are much more fun than the KLR. The seat is something like a MTB saddle. You have to get used to it. The standard tank is too small.
Advantages of the DR are the bulletproof engine (gives very little problems). Maintenance is simple (tappets to set valves). Engine performance of the DR is better in general. The KLR pulls better from low revs but the Suzi's gearing is better.
