all terrain bike boots
 

I've owned Daytona Lady Star boots for 5+ years and they're fantastic. Have never leaked, warm in winter, moderately cool in summer. But I've never worn them for my trail riding days because the leather is quite soft and I think it would be ruined by the spiked foot pegs & they were quite a financial investment!

For the trails, I wear Alpinestar MX boots but they're not waterproof, not warm and not nice to walk in.

I'm looking for an all-terrain boot, what do other women wear?
My biggest challenge is finding boots that can accommodate large calves & a lady sized 39 (6) foot.

I love my Altbergs and have worn them to bits, through UK to India, and all round NZ. However I feel so vulnerable in them.

They are fantastic for tramping/hiking, doing security work where I am on my feet all day, but as soon as I go off road, if I am on a short trip, I swap back to Moto X boots.

Its all sods law though, 4 months ago I was wearing sidi adventure boots, took a tumble on a steep hill on an enduro track, only doing 5kph and broke 2 small bones in my ankle. I've also had a much faster road accident and not a scratch on me.

As for waterproofness, Adventure boots with membranes in them, once you go through a river, they will take days and days to dry out. I have sealskin socks, and put these on once by boots are wet if I'm riding through rivers, and put them on in the morning if its a day of riding in constant rain.

Anyroad, in the meantime I found another bootmaker that does custom boots at what I consider pretty reasonable prices.
Vendramini.com make them in Italy.
Large calves usually suit Gaerne boots.

My lady customers rave about the Forma Adv boots.. the sole is like a trainer.. and with the ski straps, are good for adjustable calf sizes...

I might be home for a couple of weeks in November, so should be picking up my Daytonas,,, miss them but they never became comfortable to walk in, although I might buy some Svartz Footbeds for them...

I have Altberg boots but they're the short type. So I wear Forcefield knee protectors which, for me, cover both the knee & most of my shin. So I felt much safer. However riding through fords got my boots soaking wet & they took several days to dry.
I'll look into the Forma boots :)

I submerged my Sidi Adventure (with Goretex membrane) entirely! Had to pour the water out.That evening dried them out with microfiber towel, took the inner sole out did some more wiping with the microfiber towel and left them to dry in a moderately cool room overnight! Next morning they were bone dry! No issue at all despite the membrane!

The forma boots are a good budget buy (mine have done about 40 days continuous wear, road and trail, wet and dry and are holding up well) but if I had the pennies I'd go for the Sidis.

Any waterproof boot will take a while to dry. Empty the boot at your earliest chance and change your socks. At the end of the day do as Noel suggested above.

Apologies for the Hi-Jack. Do Alt-Berg only custom fit? I have fairly ordinary shaped feet but need the boots next week. Can I walk out of the factory shop with boots or should I forget it until I have 6-8 weeks going spare?

no, Altberg do all sorts of standard sizes. However, they measured me up at the bike show, the pair I took away I walked around the house and found them too tight, despite their advice. I had to wait a couple of weeks for a standard width fit to be made, and they posted them down to me.

Another vote for Altberg Hogg. :)

Andy, I notice you're in Yorkshire. Altberg are in Richmond, a very pleasant day out for you :) I purchased mine by walking into the shop but they will make custom boots. However, depending on the season, they may have a back-log.
I found the staff extremely helpful. Definitely worth a ride up there :)

I went for Forma adventure boots. Look great in brown, fit comfy, good so far. Plan to use them on my long trip abroad (africa or asia, who knows yet, maybe both)... oh, and I have massive calves and they fit me (size 7).

I too use the Daytone boots for the road but off road I use the BMW Enduro boots with the SealSkinz Waterproof socks which I do find warm and the Enduro boots give me super protection.

I struggled to find any boots to fit me because of the issue of wide claves I find them super comfy, waterproof and warm. Can also pull off wearing them with a dress/leggings :) Only thing I would suggest going to the factory to be fitted mine were too narrow initially so had to send them back to be stretched there was only a limit as to how much they can stretch - still a tiny bit on the tight side on one foot but not bad enough to replace them!
