Posted this elsewhere, but thought i'd stick it here to,

Was watching some Bear Grylls programme, and he was talking about his pee bottle, saying that in emergency situations, once filled, can be used as a hot water bottle, daft to waste precious heat.

Which reminded me of my tent:

when I can't be faffed with the trip outside the tent, to answer my call of nature, I use this

Whiz freedom (I find it better than the shewee because this is more flexible and easer to mould to ones figure)

in conjunction with http://www.amazon.co.uk/Whiz-Freedom.../dp/B004W2GIOY whiz drainage bag.

I empty it in the morning. Packs down to nothing, keep the whiz in a zip bag, and the two items in a small waterproof bag. Which is better than a rigid pee bottle that takes up space in precious luggage space.

Also use the whiz in horrid toilets where I wouldn't want to sit on the seat, or squat toilets where I don't want to risk falling over.

Dunno if I would put the filled bag into my sleeping bag though!

My friend bought me a whizz before I went to africa.......not got round to using it yet ! Is a good piece of kit and does pack smaller than the shewee.....

Forgot to bring it with me to south America :(

Joking apart. I used to use a P155 bottle. That was till one time I did not put the top back on tight enough and it leaked inside the tent.
Now I have a new tent and make sure I go out side. I know its a pain when the weather is bad, but for me its a Hygiene thing.

I use of these for a huge number of jobs from carrying water from river/taps/whatever to tent / wash clothes etc etc. They make a perfect loo for both sexes.

TIP - place Ortleib inside plastic bag to avoid contamination, make a wee (sorry about pun!) nest with few sheets of loo paper.
Next morning hold edges of plastic and fold over, tie knot and dispose of.
If using bio-degradable bags it is not eco-unfriendly.
Beats going out of the tent at night IMHO, in rain/mozzies etc- I'd rather stay in once cosy. Maybe old age is beginning to show!!

For 'Numero uno's', Hombres are better off using a one litre polycarbonate bottle as it makes a nice hot water bottle afterwards- Do make sure lid firmly closed.... else you get a Dazzer moment!:Beach:

If I've had a few too many beers, one litre isn't enough capacity for a couple of goes in the night.
Trying to stop mid-stream as you watch the pee level rise to critical isn't a comfortable situation.:eek3:

The Ortleib washbowl also comes in 10 Litres and I believe a huge one whose capacity I don't know so....
no reason not to enjoy your cervezas!! (or have a wee-interruptus moment either!)

My ex took one of the 'shewees' to Africa with us. She didn't get over the fear of using it until Ethiopia, and then the first time she used it, she didn't seal properly around herself. Because she was hot, and it had been raining, she didn't realise she was just urinating straight down her leg.

Every had to have someone's pissy legs wrapped around you in 40 degree heat for a whole day?

She never used it again.

It does say in the instructional leaflet to practise using it in the shower before you have to use it in testing circumstances, I would recommend that to all using these gadgets.

p.s and thats why I prefer the 'whiz' brand as its made from more flexible silicone and moulds better to ones undercarriage !

What is wrong with doing it the way nature intended? Hanging free in nature.

I mean, one extra piece of kit, also means another thing to clean which means you need more soap and more water... and of course if you are hygene conscious then you wouldn't use the same vessel for drinking water, so you need to keep it separate from other gear. No matter what Bear Grylls says or does.

If it's raining, you get wet. If there are loads of mosquitos then you'll probably get bitten and if it is freezing cold then you might freeze something important. :rofl:

If you're in public then take this example:
In India and Africa, buses that travel long distances stop on the side of the road to let everyone off for a toilet break. When these stops are in the wild and there are no facilities then it's very common to see all the men go to one side of the bus and the women all go to the other side of the bus to pee, just in the open, like animals. When done, they all go back into the bus.

I'm sure you could as a biker find a small tree or shrub, well, that is unless you are in the dessert and there isn't anything but sand and rocks for 400kms! Then you have your bike...

I don't mind this, when it doesn't involve getting out of my warm tent. When I'm camping in the cold, its not worth the trouble of getting cold, once cold I won't get back to sleep- bad nights sleep could spell danger on the road!

But yes, free-weeing is great! There is something quite er... nice about feeling the breeze on your bum.

Maybe I should shut up now!

Just a thought but maybe your gear isn't warm enough??

On our recent trip my wife used a short version of the 'tupperare' plastic resealable cereal containers (lke this Addis White Cereal Box 510478: Amazon.co.uk: Kitchen & Home: Addis).

It fitted perfectly in the rooftent pocket, is reasonably 'lady shaped' so doesn't need a seal. Is just the right height to kneel over and fit between your legs, can be sealed after use so you don't have to worry about knocking it over in the tent and can be emptied later when convenient.

It can also be used in the passenger footwell of the land rover when there is no natural cover nearby or even, in an emergency, under a long skirt :innocent:.

The version we have also had a round 'dipensing' hole in the top which was ideal for me to use as well and it held 3 litres.

It saved us climbing down from the rooftent in the middle of the night in a storm:thumbup1:
