1983 Yamaha XT 550 Crank Cover, Right Side
 

Hey everybody! I don't know if this is the spot to post this but I'm going to go ahead.

A few days ago I just bought a 1983 Yamaha XT 550. It's a great running bike, starts up nice, but it's got a small knick / crack in the crank case and it's slowly leaking oil. It's right on the corner where someone hit something. I've included photos to show you.

I don't know what to do to repair it? They sadly don't make the cover part for it anymore, and I know you can't really weld magnesium. So I honestly don't know what to do?

If anybody knows where to find one, or has one for sale please let me know. Believe me I've definitely searched the Internet, along with ebay and haven't come up with anything.

Cant see the crack, but....

I cracked the sidecase on my xt600, is alu and got welded, but was still seaping oil. I removed it, sanded the inside lightly, and used chemical metal, like JBweld (just a local brand instead) and its been fine for months.

So that might just be an option for ya. :thumbup1:

Hello there! The crack is right there in the middle of the picture, it's on the corner piece where all the paint is missing. It's not very big but it's enough for the oil to leak out. :-/

Yeah I had thought about using some kind of sealant, like this one here: PRO-SEAL TYPE TANK SEALANTS from Aircraft Spruce

Might be my only choice.

JB weld , Fixed a hole in my 86 4 years ago with it. Sanded it and painted it and you would never know its there. THUMPTHUMP

I just finished fixing a pin hole caused by the shifter rubbing on the stator cover. The Previous Owner (PO) must have been pretty sloppy to allow such a scrape to continue. It is filled with JB Weld, sanded, primed with etching primer, painted and it is impossible to see the repair...

my repair was the same as Steves and for the same reason, previous owner neglect. THUMPTHUMP

The '84 thru'89 600's side case will fit as well if fixing doesn't work. Should be easy to fix however that is where the oil passage is to feed oil to the crank, I believe,

I really do appreciate the help! I've been looking for a side cover on ebay for a couple of weeks now and still haven' found anything. So it looks like I'll be going to JB Weld route. What i the best way to clean out that area, especially if there is a crack there is going to be oil residue still up inside there.

I used spray carb cleaner. Its mostly alcohol and will get down in the crack and evaporate quickly. then use compressed air. Then apply your jb wield. After drying, sand and paint. wala! THUMPTHUMP

I used brake cleaner, then sanded the area, used compressed air to clean it, brake cleaner again and a clean cloth, then JB weld. It cures pretty fast, so try to be fast, and make sure to squize some JB wled down the gap/crack.
