1985 Yamaha xt600 problems
My xt600, when I ride for about an hour it shuts off. I have replaced the coil but that did not help. If I let it cool down it will then start.:helpsmilie:

Is your bike an import?
Mine is and the wiring has been 'bodged' beyond beleif in order to comply with the UK requirements!!! It depends on the mood of the bike what is going to work and what doesn't - fortunately it's mainly the indicators and not the ignition or anything that would cause it to stop running. If you can get the loom checked out - it sounds like a bad connection or poor earth that is causing your probs (I'm an electrician so I know about these things!!!) As soon as I get the chance my loom is getting an upgrade and will be the end of all my probs (fingers crossed) Tom:confused1: |
If you find one tell me........

BUT you can get the pins and the 3.9mm proper japanese m/f sockets from a guy on ebay. which I did, and I will be making my own loom, just re-using the plastic sockets. Martyn |
Mine is an oldie ('84)
Most of the connections at the back of the headlight cowl have been changed to crimped on bullet connectors and they are pretty crap. I'm nearly tempted to solder all the wires together but then I wouldn't be able to take the controls off if I needed to (not the end of the world). I spoke to spares dept at Padgetts in Batley (my nearest Yam dealer) and most of the old XT models spares are discontinued. Tom |
Fuel supply problem?
Quote:
Hi, a :welcome: is relevant I reckon! I suggest that you don't discount the fuel supply too quickly - could be fuel starvation - if you have a good spark and a fuel supply then you should get some kind of explosion in the right place. It is always difficult to understand all of the symptoms that you are experiencing, so the more that you can explain, the easier it may be for someone to recognise the problem; I reckon you should do some reading in here of other threads because there have been issues like this raised before - one or other of the posts may be exactly what you are getting with your bike. If it is electrical then, yes, make sure that the connections in the wiring are good and not corroded (can get hot after running current for a while with increased resistance). Good luck, |
electrical
for general ectrical problems, you can check here:Motorcycle Electrical Parts (ElectroSport Industries)
in your specifical case, some of the earlier XTs had problems with CDI overheating, you can try to make a longer cable and put it under the seat instead of just over the engine. This is a first easy try. Otherwise it could be a stator wire going bad, in this case you should try to bring a tester with you, and do a stator resistance check after the bike shut off. (you can do a stator check also before, this is part of the general check at first point!) |
