1986 XT600 won't run properly

Hello all,

I have bought a C-reg 1986 xt600 which hasn't been running in two years. I have given it a full service, ie all filters, oil and spark plug. I stripped and cleaned the carb twice, i have checked the valve clearances too but it still won't run properly. It can be difficult to start and when it does, the revs rise and fall without me touching the throttle and when you ride it, it seems as though the engine is being starngled, ie no power and you get a popping noise from the exhaust, i think it's backfire.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Neil.

If the bike was left with fuel in it... The only way to clean the carbs is ultrasonically - even then its not 100% g'teed that all the passages will be cleared.
I'd be tempted to try another secondhand carb - or one off a working bike to be sure, before going off on a spending spree replacing everything!
Good luck

ok, cheers for the suggestions. So you both seem to think, like I do, that it is just a dirty carb problem rather than engine components failure?

It sounds just like mine did before a good carb cleaning. Make sure you take off carb bowl, slip out pin that holds on floats and clean down where that little pin sits and undo jet and make sure 100% clean.

I have had the floats off and the jets out??? I am worried now cos I have tried all of these things and it still won't run

Trouble wiv carbs is the really fine passages are usually tucked away (can't see 'em) and they're the ones that get blocked, so you can't poke 'em clear!
Ultrasonic or lots of soaking/blowing & patience.

Also, check for airleaks on both sides of the carb.

I wondered about air leaks to. I have replaced the carb to cyl head rubbers and made sure the air intake pipes are tightened nicely. I was thinking of getting a repair/overhaul kit for the carb.

Check this out, it's another thread I started. I don't have a fuel pump on my bike. Should I have a fuel pump? It's fed straight from the tank to the carb.
