1989 XT600 No Spark
Hi Guys, I recently purchased a 1989 xt600. Whoever owned this bike before must have used it for a parts bike because the ignition system is a mess. the stator coil wiring colors did not match so I bough one off of Ebay from a 1985 that had the correct wiring colors. The coils orange wire had a short where it entered the coil and the sparkplug wire had been cut and taped together in 3 places. I had a new universal aftermarket coil that installed. I still do not have spark. The CDI box # is 5y1-52 and im wandering if is compatible with this bike. Before I buy a CDI box I would like a 2nd opinion. I checked the wiring against the Clymer diagram and and my ohm meter and it checks out ok. The only way I can get the neutral light to come on is thru the kickstand. Ive grounded the neutral light wire to the case and that does not light it either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Jay

You should find a black/white cable on the CDI. Disconnect it and you should have a spark. If it does not work, do not connect but check on the CDI side if the cable gets ground. A ground signal indicates a bad CDI, common fault on the 5Y1.
By disconnecting you eliminate possible faults from ignition lock and kill switch. Ignition off means ground signal to CDI. Good luck. |
Yes bike is kick start only.

Bubbla, I connected my ohm meter between the black/white wire on the cdi side and ground and I get 1000ohms?

Not for sure. This is my first Yahama to work on so I dont know all the little quirks with them.

1000 ohms is NOT ground and may be ok. Not sure what else to suggest though...

I ordered another cdi box off of ebay and it came in today. Im going to put it on here in a minute and I really hope that it will spark. Im really starting to get frustrated with this bike!!!!!!!!!!!!
