1990 XT600 Restore
Hi Everyone
I've just got hold of a 1990 XT600 to restore - it's my first restore bike, although I've got car experience and I'm busily getting stuck in. I have a whole bunch of questions, but to start a couple that I'd appreciate some input on. 1) Plastics... from this useful place and others I think I can put 1990-95 plastics on this bike. Local wreckers have nothing. What about the US sites like partsmonster? Anyone used? Specifically I need a headlight cowl and both scoops and left had side. Ideas welcome. I keep an eye on Ebay here (Oz), UK and DE. 2) I have the service manual which tells me bolt size and thread pitch but no length. Other than measuring what comes off, are there any references for this? Noticed a couple of SS bolt suppliers on Ebay US - any reviews? Anyway, hope to get this bad boy back on the road, I've got a small tent and a thirst for adventure. And a family, but we'll deal with that nearer the time.. Thanks Jim:thumbup1: |
Here is a link to a US site for the '90 XT600 US model. Not sure how it compares with yours. Parts shipment to Australia is expensive.
Yamaha Motorcycle Parts 1990 XT600EA SIDE COVER Diagram I have delt with this company many times and am satisfied with the service. Good luck on you project. I just put all new plastic on my 86 US model. Graphics are another thing. I had to send in a side cover so the graphics could be copied, others were available on ebay. Check with your local dealer to see if graphics are available for you bike. I am not sure how later plastic fits your model, somewhere in 90 or 91 XT were not imported to US any longer so cannot speak to those models.:clap: Steve |
The XT stopped being imported to the US in 1995. but some that were leftover where sold as being 1996 models.
SuperJim: Cheapest place I could find online in the US for my 1990 XT600E was Boats.net - New and Used Boats for Sale, Outboard Boat Motors, and Discount Outboard Boat Parts 1990 XT600EA 1990 XT600EA Yamaha Motorcycle Parts Front headlight cowling: 1990 XT600EA Yamaha Motorcycle COWLING 1 Diagram and Parts Air scoops: 1990 XT600EA Yamaha Motorcycle FUEL TANK Diagram and Parts Side covers: 1990 XT600EA Yamaha Motorcycle SIDE COVER Diagram and Parts Rear fender: 1990 XT600EA Yamaha Motorcycle SEAT Diagram and Parts Also, I can't remember to have found any bolts on my 1990 XT600EA to have had anything but Metric threads! SteveLoomis: 1986 XT600S 1986 XT600S Yamaha Motorcycle Parts another website I used before was Yamaha Parts | Yamaha Accessories - Up to 50% Discount |
Other than Boats.net there are a few US companies that I buy from but I don't think they ship overseas. As for buying parts for the electric start models from the US is usually hopeless . While they were imported till '95, they sold very few for some reason and used parts are almost non existent and we have to buy from overseas ourselves.

Partzilla is part of Boats.net. Prices are cheaper on Partzilla, same company, different prices. Not sure about international shipping but I think they do. One of my forum friends on the RZ/RD 350 forum has bought from them. You will surely want to check what shipping will be. Small packet probably not too bad, fenders and other plastic could be expensive because of the size.

Steve: They might be cheaper for other random stuff but I just had a look at boats.net and the partzilla and if you check the side covers links boats.net beats partzilla for almost $6.31, same thing for the headlight cowling $11.16..
When I need, I buy my stuff from them.. IF I can't find it on any of the ebay websites.. I can vouch for them because I never had a single problem yet! :) Vando |
Thanks for the links everyone. I'll be sure to check them all out - comments on shipping prices noted. If any of the Aussie contingent have local suppliers of the plastics for this model either new or used, then I'm all ears.

I just now looked up piston prices for a Yamaha RZ350.
14 31K-11631-00-94 PISTON STD $106.49 $62.79 Partzilla 14 31K-11631-00-94 PISTON STD $141.12 $105.71 Boats.net This is what I've seen for the most part. There are probably exceptions. I have bought for both the RZ350 and XT600 from Partzilla and always enjoyed the best prices there. Sometime Ron Ayres is cheaper on plastic and I bought most of my plastic for my 86 from them .... |
Yeah.. but I'm not saying one is better than the other.. just for the parts I've searched for the XT and a few for the YZ it was cheaper for me on boats.net and sometimes they have some promo codes which is always good :)
I do however buy mostly on ebay for NOS and stuff.. It's always good to have some other options to buy parts from :) |
I bought from boatsnet a couple of times.
They offer international shipping, I believe theres a shipping calculator at the end of the order, so you can see totalt cost before you make the final order. |
Great, thanks for the info.
Anyone know if there's a resource which states all bolts lengths (or some other way for me to replace duff fixings without measuring them up individually)? Cheers Jim |
