1VJ persistent stalling problem.
1986 1VJ Tenere. This is a persistent problem that I posted back in January, thought I'd solved but hadn't so any ideas much appreciated.
The bike starts and ticks over fine. It runs through all the gears no problem. When hot or cold however, it stalls when I brake at low speeds, usually when coming to a stop. As soon as the brake is applied with any force at all the revs drop off straight away and I can only keep it going using lots of throttle tweeks. I have just replaced a broken inlet manifold on the right carb which I hoped may be the problem but wasn't and have made a point of trying as much obvious stuff as I can think of (adjusting clutch cables etc). My tech experience is low but I'm learning fast(ish) and want to solve this myself so any ideas?? |
Try to adjust the idle mixture screw, on the front lower side of the carb. Most probably you'll need to screw it out a few turns.

Have you tried to disconect the brake light switches??

If the bike is ticking over in neutral or in first with the clutch depressed and stationary with the brake on it does not stall the bike so I don't see how it could be that kind of electrical problem... could it?

If the bike is running ok stationary with the brake on, forget this...
In fact, the bike has CDI ignition (not affected by the primary eletrical system), but after 4 months I think it's time to despaired level ideas... hehehehheeh... http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb/wink.gif ------------------ Fernando&Carmen Webmasters www.xt600.com.br |
Stop laughing at me!! Thanks for the ideas anyway. I'm about to disappear for 3 weeks and wont be able to check responses for a while but please keep any ideas coming as I'll check them all when I get back. As was just said it has been 4 months now and I'm getting desperate. Thanks in advance.

If it's only under braking, two thoughts occur to me: 1) your clutch may be adjusted Ok, but if it is not lubricated properly the inner cable will drag against the outer sleeve. The bike might stall when you pull the lever when braking because at those times the drag would have a critical affect on whether the clutch is actually disengaged in time. 2) The side stand cutout switch. I have experience that this can do dome pretty weird things when it decides to go wrong; it might not always play up in the wet. Also, forward movement of components under braking could be responsible if the 'right' wire has become bare from rubbing against something else. The movement under braking might then cause that errant bare wire to earth against the frame...... Something to have a look for, at any rate. Good luck!
