2006(!) XT600E speedo readout issue
 

Afternoon all!

I have just bought a secondhand XT600E by private sale. The bike was imported by KJM Superbike (from EEC?) and sold new in June 2006. It is pristine and I'm looking forward to many happy miles on it.

However, there is one minor niggle - the speedo face has been replaced with a "mph overlay", so speed is now indicated in mph, but the odometer is reading kilometres! It is a 100% analogue unit, cable driven from the front hub.

Question is: can I simply replace the existing speedo unit with a genuine UK unit (for miles/mph), or will I need to replace the hub drive/cable too?

It's a minor gripe, but chuffing annoying nonetheless!

All suggestions welcome!

I recently got round to renewing the speedo on my XT after the odo gave up. After a failed search for a second hand one, was quoted £146 for a new unit (which looks like it cost about 50p to make!) so went for a Trail Tech Vector instead. Initial impression v. favourable. Several features the ordinary speedo doesn't have, including a temp. sensor that fits under the spark plug to give you a head reading. Obviously has an Odo and a choice of mph/kph, plus various trip meters including disatnce, riding time etc. Cost £65, which is a fair bit more reasonable than the cost of a new oem unit.

Thanks all! I forked out for a new UK-spec OEM speedo head in the end. Problem solved, but I wish I'd known about the Trail Tech digital dash - looks good!

Do I need to change it?
 

I've a similar problem on my ex italian '90 tenere without the mph overlay, but my question is do I need to change it? I prefer Km especially when overseas and its not exactly too quick so i just remember what the conversion is.
It got it's last MOT like that but was the tester just turning a blind eye?

I did`nt think a speedo was in the test, I know my bikes been thru the last 3 tests without one:scooter:

No, oddly a speedo is not a necessity to pass an MOT!

Very interesting (albeit old) thread for me - my XT6 is also an E.C bike imported by the owner into the UK in 1999 (a British soldier serving in Poland where he purchased the thing). Similarly my bike has a MPH sticker put over the clocks and the trip function is KM's. I'm keeping a close eye on this thread for ideas...

If a speedo is FITTED it must work!

My bike has a full MOT using the sticker...
