Ah, excellent. I was wondering what my next bike was going to be! !)
Matt :) |
Although, it will only be great if they make it properly. Good bash plate, proper big tank, good suspension, good wheels etc. There is a chance it will be a bit of a 'cosmetic' adventure bike.
Lets hope they can resist the urge to save a few quid and produce something really good. Matt |
Yep, it's gotta be the real deal to have the Tenere name. Hopefully the gearbox is ok, my friend has a Yamaha quad dealership, and he's forever repairing the gearboxes on Raptors and Rhinos, both 660 and 700 models. Does the new 660 have the same woes?
If it's gonna be the real thing though, I'll be clearing an XT size hole in the shed! Pete |
Theres a risk they will just use the tenere name to cash in.
The 660R was a poor replacement for the XT600 and basically a cheap commuter with no thought for overlanding or adventure. I hope they dont just take the 660R and put a big tank on it and some flashy paint. Something to really challenge the KTM 640 adventure is what we want. |
It certainly dents easily at low speeds - as I proved on a dealer test-ride.:oops2:

Now you really are excited Ted! The thread has moved on to the XT660R is how I read it :rolleyes2:
Cheers |
Yeah. I put a grand's damage into an XT660R on a test ride.
'twas me own fault: road-biassed usage of the front brake washed it out whilst on beach shingle. It was only after that (and the broken bone in my hand healed) that I started riding trials. |
1991-1999 Tenere BYRD Rallye parts
hi all
yes this new 2008 tenere does look the goods for sure..however for all of those that have the xtz660 from 1991 to 1999.. i do have in my posetion some genuine (brand new) BYRD parts. I had purchased them (after a long search) to do a trip through the Australian outback only to have the trip cancelled. the parts i have are, BYRD rear side tanks aprox 6-7 litres each BYRD front bash plate water tank, about 3 litres BYRD rear Rallye guard All of these are paintable and to my knowkedge have not been used. If anyone is interested email me at Troybell37@msn.com tas74t Just letting all the Tenere fans know that the BYRD gear mentioned above is now on ebay to view and hopefully bid on..thanks |
Yes, please...
We think that even this new Ténéré might be a 'ghost'.
But we're still hoping for the best.... Just like we did on the "new super tenere 1000" a few years ago. And: tas74t; You've got mail..:D |
Quote:
Iv just got a new job in a Motorcycle dealership who happen to be a huge Yamaha dealer too :) Hopefully ill find out soon (i dont start there for 2 weeks though) |
from what i've heard...
it's been said, the new bike will be present in Paris, next september....:innocent:

Yamaha XT660R - round the world
I just finished my trip around the world - 32.000 km in 95 days, and I must say that my bike, 2007 Yamaha XT660r was great. Not a single failure all on the way, and handling, performance, reliability was great. I did a lttle modification before I left, - bigger tank, new exhaust 2-1 system and other smaller things, but overall it worked out great.

it,s official , yamaha today showed off it,s new xt660 tenere , it comes with a 22 litre underseat fuel tank . i think yamaha have just stolen the bmw f800gs,s thunder . available in 2008 .
|
It's real!
|
|
What is there not to like about this bike ?
(Except that I've just wasted a fortune renovating my Super Ten, which I no longer love because I want one of these, right now.) It will be more reliable than a KTM Adv, lighter than an 800gs and loads of good stuff on the way too it seems. Bingo, me thinks |
i think bmw will end up kicking themselves that they did not release their F800GS sooner , and do not forget that the beemer will cost A LOT MORE than the new tenere .
|
good one
I have travelled the world on a 1986 XT600Z tenere (270.000km on the clock) for more than six years. Maybe if I do it again in 10 or 20 years, I will take the the new 2008 XT660Z. I like the look of the bike, but of course before I buy it for my next journey I will have to go more into details. But I am sure that Yamaha is back with a good new travel bike, congratulations to Iwata.

22 litre tank, proper seat, skidplate, rack and a proven motor and chassis. I'm impressed. Welcome back, Yamaha...

Times like this I wish I worked for Yamaha instead of Kawasaki and Suzuki. Ill be ordering one in the spring. Everything seems perfect. Nice strong steel frame, screen, tucked away exhaust (unlike the stupid 660 traily), 22 litre underseat tank and proper brakes. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I seriously cant wait. Yamaha have made a seriously good move here. My only gripe is that I can see my XT600E taking second place in my travel fleet :( P.S Have you noted how the grey on the Tenere matches perfectly with my power coated metal mules :D They must have been listening lol |
Nice

On the verge of doing my cross Africa trip on an R myself. Modded similarly like yours, but no 2in1 exhaust. And back on track... Try and make a comparison on Yamaha's site between this new Tenere and the R. The two things that stand out is the bigger tank, and the 10 cm better groundclearence. Pending the price of purchase, you could save the bigger tank purchase and the 2in1 exhaust (if you feel it's necessary) for the R and buy the Tenere instead. But other than that, the data page reveals no real difference. And the engine...yup..the same as on the R. |
Keep your fingers crossed
Wow!! As a stateside owner of a 1983 XT600Z Tenere and a 1991 XTZ750 Super Tenere (both greymarket bikes), I can only hope that Yamaha will have enough sense to bring it to us in the USA. Based on their past history, it is very unlikely. I will put one on order the moment they do.

Well, I'd been thinkin about a vstrom next year, but thats gonna look just amazin next to my blue 3AJ!
The white with speed blocks looks ace, but, I still want one in Sonauto blue! Seriously tho, If it's a bike worthy of the Tenere name, I'll be placing my deposit as soon as possible. Pete |
I read in MCN that it uses the 4 valve engine from the new MT03 and not the 5 valver from the XT. I wonder what that new engine is like, that 5 valver has been around for ever, and it works.

Bit of a monster aint it?
183kg dry! My giddy aunt
My TT600R is supposed to be 134kg dry and isnt exactly light weight. A 650 transalp is nearly 20kg lighter! I've got to admit I'm utterly disappointed with it after what the initial drawings showed. Its not even that cheap at about £5000. Oh well...... |
I want one,I want one, I want one. I regreted selling my 97 XTZ660 and now I hear that they will probably not be bringing them into Australia :censored:.
183kg dry! My giddy aunt
A 650 transalp is nearly 20kg lighter! According to their figures, the Honda Transalp is 191kg dry. Just sayin... Honda Motorcycles Models We wanted a sturdy, well-equipped out-of-the-crate overlander - that's what we've got. The 'skidplates, luggage rack, big screen' wish-list all add weight. Ditching the cans for aftermarkets will probably save 10kgs. As would having a nice relaxing poo before leaving the house. Ride the bike, not the spec sheet, maybe? I'm delighted to see a Japanese bike company back in the game. Good work, Yamaha. Suerte, Dan |
Weight rant
Quote:
Would you really like a state-of-the-art carbon fibre framed XT which, if it broke would leave the mechanics in Mali no option but gaffa tape? I took my 185kg across full-on Africa in 1990 with no problem, including 20 ft deep mud ruts in Zaire (OK, then I had to throw the bike on its side and drag it out) and the Sahara crossing. OK, I'm a relatively big guy, but if you're not, then just buy a smaller bike. Give me something that's (a) over-engineered so it doesn't break in the first place (b) made of materials that Joe Bloggs can fix if it does. Still, I wish they would ditch those stoopid trendy heavy exhausts. |
Quote:
|
I think it looks like a great bike, the weight is similar to a BMW F650 GS and I know which one I would rather have!
Weight issues are usually stressed about by people who are carrying about 20 extra kilos around the midriff! The only silly thing in my opinion (as has already been mentioned) is the over complicated exhaust. Any ideas on price anybody?? |
>Any ideas on price anybody??
£5k. Ish. |
It looks like there's some potential for a good bike there. From what I can see from the pictures on Yamaha's website the quality of the components looks better than the built-to-a-budget XT660R. It'll be interesting to see if they've put some decent quality suspension on it, or will it just be basic stuff with little or no adjustment.
As others have pointed out the biggest downer is the weight. There's no getting around the fact that 183kg is heavy for a 48bhp single cylinder bike. KTM's 640 Adventure is listed as 158kg, and has a 25.5L fuel tank..... |
"According to their figures, the Honda Transalp is 191kg dry. Just sayin..."
Good job i didnt buy one then! I'd read somewhere on the web quoting 165kg and quite fancied one as i enjoyed a ride one in the past, but not on anything tricky. 640 adventure is probably a better comparison, shame about the vibes. Serious question though, who here is going to put their hand in their pocket and pay £5000-ish for this bike? |
Dear god i'm so close to just throwing the credit card at the local dealer and ordering one £5k is a realistic price for a bike that if it lives up to standards expected should last 20 plus years.
|
Quote:
No doubt some of the parallel importers will be knocking them out for a good deal less than that if you're patient. Not so long ago several dealers advertising in the MCN were knocking out XT660R's pre-registered for around £3500, compared to the £4500 my local Yamaha dealer is asking. |
Quote:
Thereafter, price will be an influence, as ever. Overall, 2008 will be a good year for Dual Sport/Adv bikes! ps Not sure about judging the quality of components from a picture - I guess the Yamaha bolts will fur after one winter, if not before. |
Is the mentioned weight with rack and panniers?
Or just hitting an extra 20 kg!!!! I like the looks and the idea behind....now once the first are out reality will show us the rest.

I dont think it would be wise to put money down on one until a head to head test has been done against the new KTM 690 Adventure and with the BMW F800 GS.
Which is going to be the best ride !! We can only guess. I think the Tenere is certainly going to win on price but im thinking the KTM will be the most "capable", with the BMW coming in as the most comfortable and practical. (at a guess) Plus, who would be daft enough to buy a bike in its first year anyway ?? I wouldnt buy any of these new models until 2009 when they have hopefully sorted all the teething problems out and we have examples of high mileage and reliabilty. |
Also, anyone noticed the front Mudguard !!
You're not going to be able to get knobbleys on with it there. |
Shocker
Quote:
I rather thought you might be looking at the swinging arm Mark; I don't think Yam will be using that box section again, ever -- too much competition from the other manufacturers to make the swinging arm a work of art!! I will be looking for what shock is fitted; it won't be White Power!!:rolleyes2: (and I will be surprised at £5000 if it has Ohlins written on it). |
Quote:
Noted the mudguard Ted + the lack of fitted handguards/bark busters (in the pics anyway). You will know as a bike salesman that there will be plenty of people buying this bike. Maybe there will even be a waiting list for it, at first; however, like you say here, I have never bought a new model of bike (in fact I have never owned a brand new bike - as you say, I prefer someone else to be the manufacturer's tester). I could be tempted, but it hasn't happened yet!! Price: yep, list price certainly, but the KTMs will always be delivered with high quality WP suspension. Regards, |
Ténéré Photos From The Paris Motorcycle Show
Hi everyone
click here: SAlon Moto 2007 and you will find some photos of the new Ténéré at the Yamaha stand in the Paris motorcycle show. Really cute bike. I am waiting for the magazine reviews. If it is as good as it is said I will replace my old KLE500 with one of these. I´ve been waiting a long for a bike of these characteristics: not very big like the GS1200s, hard enough to follow a KTM640 on the worst terrain, and more reliable than a KTM (sorry for the guys in orange), and of course, cheaper. If the XT660 is 7000 euros, and so is the MT03 (roadster with the same engine, but new frame, suspensions, etc), I hope Yamaha guys keep the price not far away 7500 euros. Here in Spain we will have to wait until next March, though. Gazzzzz!!!! Jules |
Quote:
It does look small in those pictures unless the model (you I'm guessing) are very tall. From comparing the pictures, it seems that a few of the pics have all the extras bolted on. Crash bars, alloy bash plate and screen protector plus what "seems" a higher front mudguard to accommodate knobblies :thumbup1: |
Those who have touched the bike -- what do you think about these panniers? Are they made of plastic or metal or what?
|
Quote:
Sorry man, the guy there is not me. I got the photos on the internet, but looking at the other people, that guy must be near 2m tall, so don't look at him to get an idea of the size of the bike :) and it has some good extras available. I'm quite impatient about what the bike magazines will say about it. I read a few words in an article about the paris show and the only things they say is that the frame is the same as the XT, the suspensions have been taken a little bit higher and the engine has been touched to be softer, without taking power off. One interesting thing is the narrow tank (most of it goes under the seat). It will handle very well, I suppose (and hope). I have been waiting for a bike like this for a long time, and the new transalp does not get the philosophy of this tenere, I think (and has a shape not many will like, sorry for the Honda fans). |

Heavy Man - but looks so nice.
Glad I haven't traded the XT in for a V-Strom just yet!
But this bike is hefty for off road - I'm still recovering from a knackered back after dropping the XT in July!! Doing approx 0 mph when I fell off, but trying to lift it really did my lower back in. I would not be able to lift this new bike if it went down in an awkward place. But it does look good - wish I could ride like the the guy on the video. My wife will not be pleased to see this she prefers the look of the pillion seat on the V-Strom 1000. Cheers - Dave. |
Yamaha in the U.S.A.
I ride an older KLR and I don't really consider the new model enough to warrent the expence to 'upgrade'. The Teneree on the other hand, hmmmm.
I hope Yamaha America will realize not everyone here lusts after cruzer-bagger-custom types. But I have learned not to hold my breath. |
Quote:
"We regret to announce that the new Tenere wont be sold in the US but to make up for it we are releasing a new super chromed Dragstar cruiser with even more chrome, less handling and a bigger polluting engine than ever. For those who were really desperate for the Tenere, we will be putting a 21" front wheel on selected super chromed Dragstars and tasseled hill billy leather bags..... Aviator sunglasses and "yeeeeeeee haaaaaaa" hooters to be sold separately" :innocent: |
It will be a while before I can get an XTZ new, but in that time at least most of the early gremlins should have been ironed out. After a 1986 XT600Z and a TDR250 I've been a Honda man for the last 13 years (two 600 Transalps and currently an Africa Twin). This Yamaha is the first new model I have seen that really makes me want it.
Since Honda are apparently no longer interested in our part of the market (viz the new 'Transalp' with its 200 Kg dry weight, smaller tank, 19" front wheel and complex brakes (among other things)), I will be going back to Yamaha for sure. It's not as if Honda's adventure models have been particularly well built over the last nine years or so - the legendary build quality is just that these days, and reserved for their flagship sports bikes. It would take a return to the build quality my original 1989 Transalp had, and a return to the design that made that bike (and the Africa Twins) so useful to make me go back to Honda. I don't think that will happen any time soon; Honda is interested in taking some market share from the Versys and 650 V-Strom. Even in that the new Transalp falls short. Weight issues aside, well done Yamaha for producing something close to what we want. The spirit goes on. |
Tenere '08
Hey, people! I just heard at my Yamaha-dealer, that the new Tenere will be available in april/may 2008, instead of febr./march. Why, they couldn't tell me? Here in Holland it will cost 7999,- euro's, that's a fair price. I saw the Tenere in Paris and am anxious to testride one. Maybe I'll trade my XT600E for one, I'm hesistating. Time will tell!! XT-greetings, Hans van Langen.

New Tenere
:scooter: Wow I really like the look of this bike. Could we finally have a Bike that can knock BMW off the top. I hope so. If Yamaha do this proper then it could worry KTM, BMW etc as it seem they are gonna price it around 5 grand in the UK which aint bad if it goes as good as it looks. I only wish i had the money to buy and prep one. I dont so I will buy a recent XT instead and hope the new Tenere is crap. But i will be pleased if its not as I can hope to buy one thats never seen dirt in 5 years time for a bargain price. :mchappy:

Yamaha Germany has now published recommended sale price of EUR 6995.- on their web site. This is actually somewhat less than expected.

But Sadly, the XT660R is £4,599 OTR so they will charge about £1000 more for the Tenere I guarantee that in "rip off Britain", we will pay at least £5495 OTR for the Tenere :( I think ill be buying one in Spain and riding it home :) |

Looks like a lip-smacking year coming up for the AM-look with the 800GS, 690 KTM, the Tenere and dare I say it, even the 700cc Trannie which at 200kg for a lovely smooth V-twin engine is not so shabby over the new Tenere's 183kg. [actually I read Tran is now 214kg. that's more like it] TBM just rated the Tran, suspension wise, over the XT660, tho it was only a quick ride and Ride like it too. The BMW 800 twin claims 178kg dry...
The new Ten looks the part which initially makes me suspicious: striking looks, relatively heavy with the cat set up and probably cheap suspension. But 22 litres set low down with EFI ought to be good for 450kms. This and the screen are great features. I dont think that low mudguard will be any more of a knobbly problem than it is on KTM Advs. I dont believe that these days excess weight adds up to a more durable bike as someone mentioned earlier - just a not very sophisticated or a penny-pinching design. What was the original k/s Tenere - 138kg? It didnt need 2 front discs. And as AMers we know that above all, weight is the thing that cramps our style out in the world when the roads get rough. It's the one thing trip reports come back to again and again with heavier bikes. The Japs in particular have never built bikes for the likes of us - they build them for people who want to look like overlanders because there are a whole lot more of them, right now probably watching BBC on a Sunday night with their mouths agape in admiration! Anyway, cant wait to find out how they all shape up. Ch |

Chris, I'm really admiring your fantastic AM feats. Your book along with Jupiter's Travels, 10 years on two wheels, Mondo Enduro on Discovery, HU etc are all fuelling my own and my wife's desire to do The Big Trip. While we're waiting for our kids to grow a bit older so that they can either join us or choose to stay at home, we are doing only shorter trips lasting a few days - trips that probably wouldn't make us fit into the proper overlander category. We're obviously one of "them". But I still prefer my Guzzi Quota, which perhaps make me look like an overlander, to any other bike (for the time being). My neighbour, on the other hand, prefers his Yamaha R1 even though he realizes he's nothing near being a Valentino Rossi. What I'm trying to say is that I hoped we all could get along here without being put into categories like "us" and "them". I believe we all dream our dreams, gaping or ungaping, and that not all of us are able to realize them. At least not yet. Sorry for being miles away from discussing Yamaha's finest - I'll stay on topic from now on. |
Something for an updated book perhaps ??
Of course! Could be a whole new Top 10 Bum some free demos ??? Tried it with Yam last time. They did not have the balls to simply say 'no' - just played hard to get for a few days. Must be some special PR ploy. Anyway sverrirt above seems to have proved the 660 RTW so that will do me. Indu: Mc-ing has come over all lifestyle/recreational/poseury but an overland journey is no fashion statement, it's the real thing and a functional machine that still delivers when the going gets rough is what will count in the end. Some old Tenere models ticked the boxes, let's hope the new one does too. You're here reading this (and other stuff) so IMO you're not a dreamer, you're in the early stages of planning so good for you ;-) But if your neighbour buys a R1200GS Adv with matching riding suit next then I think you should move! Ch |
Had a sit on the new Ten at the bike show and I must say Im impressed. Everything seemed really nice the optional akprokvics looked great. Just avoid the Luggage as it was cheap nasty and already broken. The top of the top box was bust at the plastic hinges. The bike seemed set up nice and they still rekon on under 5 grand here in the UK. Just hope the bike can live up to its name.:mchappy:

If that is the list price, then it can be just a matter of time before it is discounted by one or more dealers here (far less people looking at this bike than there were around the honeypot on the BMW stand!). Thing is that, just like the 660R, it still needs the extras - as you say, Stu, the Yam luggage is rubbish - but it does not need as much doing to it as the R model e.g. the exhaust pipes are much higher and it looks like a pretty decent screen as stock. Overall, it could be a bargain compared with the Beemer offerings. Anyone know how good the stock suspension is? I forgot to look in rushing about the NEC. :rolleyes2: Stu, A brand new, unregistered, XT600 was advertised the other day on Motortrader for £3000 - it sold PDQ. |

I`ve just heard from a mate that the bike has had a slagging off from the Austrailian press.
Any knowledge of any proper test rides having taken place?? I fancy one, but could be tempted by a KTM if this turns out to be a Cosmetic bike. |
I had a good look round the Tenere at the NEC bike show. No one on the Yamaha stand could explain the high weight quoted for the bike, the only thing that is apparent is the frame does look beefier in places particularly the sub frame, what you could see of it.
Just one issue I need to resolve or discount with a test ride. The seat felt restrictive because the rider is hemmed in between the tank and pillion, you feel stuck and unable to move back or forward. I watched a couple of people bum bounce and they came to the same conclusion. The reason for the high pillion seat is the under seat exhaust. The standard exhaust looks massive and must weigh a few kilos. I wonder if it could cause the seat to get hot as well. Overall I like it. Steve |
Those exhausts have to go...
Yes, I suspect one of the main sources of weight on the bike are those exhausts, and they would be high on my list of 'to replace' if I went for one of these. The other thing that concerns me a little is that looking at the double headlight makes me feel like I have blurred vision - not sure I'd like that feeling too often. Just as well I'd be sitting behind them. I'm looking forward to sitting on one. If what you say about the seat is true it could be an off-putting point. I usually do a fair bit of moving around on any long journey no matter how good the saddle is.
|
As far as the exhausts go at least one of the bikes had an aftermarket aprokivic setup which looked a lot neater than stock (no idea of cost but it aint gona be cheap). I didnt get a proper look at the rear shock but would hope the stock item would be ok. I hope this bike can be a real world alternative to a beemer and if the price stays under 5 grand you could kit one of these out and have a great trip for less than the base price BMW. I found the seat very comfortable and the bike felt good and I am not blessed with long legs, only a decent test ride will confirm what its really like but I can imagine the Tenere is going to be a popular Bike when it comes out, cant wait to try one out.

Hey, people! Last week I went to the Motorbeurs in Utrecht and the people at the Yamaha stand said the new Tenere isn't available until May! There are some delivery problems with parts(?) to the assembly plant here in Europe where they're made.
One other thing I noticed at the show: the oil-dipstick is in the same place as on the XT660R/X, but now enclosed by the bigger fueltank. There will be a hassle checking the oil, even more adding oil(if needed!). Just a practical point to look at, I thought. Touratech is developing parts for the new Tenere, so it won't be long after the bike is on the market, one can equip it with travel parts. Greetz, Hans van Langen. |

Yep, that's the list price - you can get a pre-registered TDM900 for that money BTW.
