I would choose something smaller, just because =) But its hard to know yout needs, you mention nothing about your trip... :/
It I had a 1200 in the garage, I'd probably use that tho' Are you gonna ride 2 on one bike, becuase that changes the above somewhat. |
Tenere Owner
I have a 2011 Tenere and you can not get me off. I have two other bikes to choose from and have put them in the back off the garage.
We have planned a 10 week trip this August, we will be shipping our bike to the U.S. from Australia and will be travelling to Alaska and across northern Canada. The bike is heavy but unnoticeable when riding. Don't judge it after your first ride, the firing sequence takes a little getting used to. The bike also suits a taller rider, I am 6'6 and when the bike is on its centre stand it take a little work to get on with all its gear on. I have taken it off road many time and enjoy the power and traction it offers. Also the 6 gallon tank offers a n extended ride time. The only modification I have done is a tall windscreen with an adjustable bracket. Before buying this Tenere I tried several other adventure bikes and am glad I chose this one. The price is also good compared to the others but I chose this one due to what it could offer. Hope this review has helped let me know if you have any more questions. Jeffrey |
Hi guys, did you notice that they were doing off-road with the supertenere with no skidplate? You can use the OEM or any other aftermarket one but you just cannot run with no skidplate on a trail and complain if you get in troubles.

It's a very big bike. It's a very heavy bike. It will ultimately limit to where you can go unless you're a very skilled off-road rider. Assuming you intend to go off the tarmac.
And I guess if you're doing a RTW, you probably won't have a choice from time to time. I can't ever imagine wanting to ride something that size on an intensive RTW trip. But then I don't like picking up massively heavy machines in 45c heat when after I'm exhausted from riding the thing all day on crappy roads. Each to their own though. |
Until recently I thought my ideal RTW bike was my XT660Z Tenere or DL650L2, but have recently concluded, although I haven't ridden one with the kit fitted, that the CB500X + Rally Raid 3 kit is the biz. That's likely what I'll be using....

..I'd go with the 660 given choice...I've done a bit of off road riding and wouldn't entertain the idea of the big bikes..unless your 8 foot tall and a gorilla.
If you've got a bit of patience on the bigger roads, and can spanner a bit an early tenere is incredibly versatile.. Rode back to UK from catálunya just over a week ago on mine, heading back on Wednesday to the mountain. Get me out of here now.. Not too good with links but search youtube for classic tenere aprop Llado catalunya..:mchappy: |
agree with the need for VERY good skills with bikes as big. You see the older dakar rally videos and the pros where flying over the dunes with those 1000cc twins, but these where PROS.
my advice? dont go on a bike that you cant pick up by yourself after a fall (without getting an hernia :) ) if i ever go back to off-roading at my age, it will only be with a 100kg 200cc two stroke nowadays! |
