3AJ engine and tacho issues...
I want drop the 3AJ engine out and give it a total rebuild, is there any other engine I can fit directly, (not changing anything around)apart from the 3AJ maybe better/stronger/more reliable than it, temporarily?
Also tacho stopped working, the cable was broke, replaced it but still not working any ideas? |
i usually have two bikes on the road so i can only recommend buying another bike to keep yourself on the road while your xt is in the garage the other alternative is buy a spare 3aj motor that needs work and rebuild that then swap it over and sell your original.
the rev counter problem maybe down to the broken cable inner jamming in its outer case and stripping the drive gears |
cable
Regarding your tacho cable, check that the new one isn't broken as well. I had a broken set of clocks on a zx7r i had and they continually broke the speedo cable until i replaced the chewed up gear inside the clocks.

I've just bought myself a 1984 34L Tenere and the needle of the tacho was lying on the bottom of the case. When I pulled the case apart to do a kiwi fix on it, the hair spring looked like a birds nest so I chucked it out. Anyone know where I can get another one from in NZ?

digital ones normally just need connecting into the trigger side of the coil :cool4: http://i577.photobucket.com/albums/s...xtclocks-1.jpg |
hey, i'm actually looking for one of those trail tech vapor computers..
How fast is the speed and the RPM reading? These are the most important things and I still haven't found any info on that... Vando :innocent: |
That Trailtech Vapour is exactly the model I was thinking of upgrading to.
Very cool!!!!! You guy's on here have done some awesome mods to your bikes and should be congratulated! After reading your posts and seeing the photo's has got me very motivated to pimp my ride! How hard was it to install the Vapour? |
dead easy to fit mind you i'm an auto electrical engineer so i do have an unfair advantage :innocent:
all the feeds are there except for the rev counter you just need to make your own idiot lights :rolleyes2: the kit comes with a speedo pick up/sensor you just need to make a mounting bracket for it :smartass: |
Very cool. I've wondered why the XT doesn't have an oil pressure warning light, like almost every other engine.
Does anyone know why it hasn't got one? |
the lack of oil pressure light is down to the fact that these bikes have a relatively low pressure lubrication system :confused1:
you could fit one but it would have to be quite a low pressure switch and is probably not worth the effort :rolleyes2: if the pressure dropped so low to trigger the warning light i think it would have already done the damage  |

these engines are air cooled and the oil does not get as hot as the gsxr as its not sprayed onto the cylinder head which would increase the temp so much you would need to fit an oil cooler :thumbup1: |
