3AJ Fuel problem
Hi would anyone know why my Tenere 3AJ runs out of fuel and still have 5lt in the tank? It's always been like it and would now like to get to the bottom of it.
If it starts to run out and go on to reserve the bike will cut out, then if I wait a few mins it will fire up and run for about 1/2 a mile and stop again, wait a few mins and fire up and do another 1/2 mile and so on. At the moment it is running through the fuel pump but i'm not sure if it's working or how to check it. I've heard of people bypassing this. All the filters and tank are clean, have had the taps out, both the tall filters had fallen out and were lying in the tank, put them back in and made no difference. Has anyone had this problem or know what it could be? |
dont quote me on this but it sounds like something is cloging your reserve passage at your petcock if your fuel pump works for the main feed i dont see why it would stop your reserve feed but it may have alternate lines so im not sure is it an electronic pump or diaphram actuated?
|
Thanks Pboko, have had the petcocks out they were clean and after the bike as what seems like out of fuel I can drain the rest of the tank through the taps. I'm not sure about the pump because the Clymer manual doesn't cover the Tenere, I'm thinking thats where the problem is.

It is diaphragm actuated on the Tenere`s & people do bypass them, check the hose going to the diaphragm (the vacuum pipe) for cracks/leaks. You can suck & blow on the pipe & hear the diaphragm working as well.
Just a question, do you turn on both fuel taps or just one? Mezo. |
Hi Mezo, I turn both taps. All I can think is it's the pump, will only have time to look at it in a week or 2 so I'm trying to gather as much info as possible now.

My pump worked fine on my 3AJ so i cant help with bypass suggestions, all that i have read is that you may struggle getting the last few of litres of fuel out of the tank without the pump fitted.
You can get pumps cheap enough off ebay.de (Germany) just search for "benzinpumpe" it wouldn't hurt to have it in your had when you go to fix it right? or to have as a spare? Some here, couple here, Mezo. |
Don't suppose you know if the 1VJ pump is the same? When I get chance to look and hopefully fix I'll post the result.

Well its the same part number on both fiches.
1VJ-13910-00 some sites put a couple more zero`s (1VJ-13910-00-00) Mezo. |
Fitted another fuel pump a few weeks ago and it seemed to have done the trick. I've just stripped the old one down today to find I full of rust. I noticed the tank had been changed when I got the bike and it has filters on it, so guessing all the rust must have come from the old tank.

Ah well its going now, keep hold of the pump as a spare.
