3AJ00 - does 00 stand for year 2000 model?

I have a 2001 XT 600 E, on the left side of the cylinder is a stamped marking: 3AJ00, is the engine really a 2000 model?

Is this engine one of those xt models that had trouble with 5th gear?

BlackDogZulu 19 Jun 2009 17:17

Mine has 3AJ00 on the left side of the cylinder, and mine's a 1994 model with original engine, so the answer is no, I think.

Hello.

Nope. The 5th gear issues are related to the 1986 / 1987 models.

Hey,

the stamp mark refers to the model in which the part was first used. So on my 3AJ I have loads of parts that say "2KF" or "1VJ". If you ever get your hands on a parts manual, you will see that the part numbers start with all kinds of models. If you want to check whether the motor is original, you need to check the motor number, which is stamped into a plastic thing under the exhaust pipe (where it goes into the frame). This won't tell you whether someone changed the barrel or cylinder head, but it will tell you whether you have an iffy gearbox.

Nope. The 5th gear issue affects all Ténérés, even the '89 and '90 models with the extra oil tube specifically added to deal with this annoying issue and a different primary transmission ratio. How do I know? Because I have one of those ('89 model 3AJ with the extra oil tube) and after roughly 65,000 kms my fifth gear sounds like Pavarotti meets Megadeth meets truck tires in a tunnel on a wet tarmac road. On meth.

That said I think it only affects Ténérés, not the regular XT600 models. They either have a different gearbox or a different transmission ratio.

10th digit of your frame VIN number is the year model code.

Downpipes

I have a 2001 Yamaha XT600E but the number on the left hand side of the engine is 3AJ00, does this mean the engine was manufactured in 2000. I need to replace the downpipes and don't want to purchase the wrong ones. If anyone has a second-hand downpipes for sale please contact me.

Did you read the above posts first?

Perhaps post a photo of the xt here or use your isp in images tab with your frame number.

Let us know the outcome.

The modelnumber on the different parts of the xt doesnt say anything about which year the bike is.

The 3aj on the cylinder is because the cylinder was made for 3aj, and newer changed from there, so it says that on all bikes after the 3aj model.

Thats how I recall it.

Graham, even if youre bike was a 2000, it uses same parts as a 2001, so cant really tell why you ask. As socks say, all the information you need is already in this thread.

New to XT600E

I am sorry but I am new to Yamaha and XT600E

I've recently bought a 2003 XT600E and am trying to understand the different year models. Mine I think is a DJ021 made from 1999 to 2004. I got this info from The Ténéré Forum • View topic - XT 600 model codes

I am wondering about how the parts from the different years fit.

Am I to assume that I can only use parts from bikes produced after 1999?
