4th and 5th gears
 

As I now have my engine out of the bike I thought I would take the opportunity to replace the 4th and 5th gears (as I have no idea of the bike history and its not been ridden by me yet I thought I would start afresh).

Does anyone have the part numbers for the bits I need?

My bike is a 34L Tenere.

Hi Andy
Because of the age of the bike you may find that the part numbers you want for 4-5 gears have changed, i found this out when replacing 5th gear on my old 1VJ at the end of last year, far better to strip the gears down and count the teeth, and then you can take the gear in to the shop so they can see it, i had three diferent 5th gears before the right one turnned up. Remember it is best to replace both parts of the gear, the drive gear and dog gear.

If the teeth are worn on the 5th gear, which is very common on the early motors the dog teeth will normally be worn to. I have rebuilt quite a few of the 600 motors, but i have yet to need to replace the 4th gear and dog, but that dose not mean that you won't have to. While you have the box apart it may be worth checking drive sprocket end of the shaft, depending what year you have, if you have a snigle nut at the end of the shaft, some times the thread go's allowing the sprocket nut to come lose while the motor is running , ive had this a couple of times. You will then need to replace the shaft.If you have the sprocket with a locking plate and bolts its not a problem.
All so worth a check is the selecter arms these can ware badly, i once had a selecter arm break while at the wrong end of Morroco. Hope this helps, Have fun with it Skip

Sorry, one more question. Is there any trick to getting the flywheel off without the proper flywheel puller… just checked their price and they are horrendous!

Do you me the alternator rotor ? if so i use a long brass punch, a couple of swift bangs turn a quarter and same again, turn, and off it comes with the starter gear still bolted to the back of it. Most people will tell you to buy the proper rotor puller, but i've never had a problem. Just be a little carefull.I do use a proper tool for undoing the clutch basket, the aluminum fingers can snap off if your not to carefull. Hope this helps Skip
