89 Xt 600 Cdi
 

Hey guys,
New to the sight. I purchased my first XT last summer and put on 6k over the summer. No problems with the bike. Love the power, performance and believe it or not gas mileage.

Anyway i just purchased another 89 with only 700 miles on it. It needs some electrical parts, but for $400 i figure you can't go wrong. I was looking through CDI's and was curious exactly which one i needed, or if one year could be interchanged with another? I see the part number on my first bikes CDI is 5Y1-52. The CDI that came with the new bike was brand new, but did not fit the bike. I have the rapair manual for the bike, but i have seen three different types of CDI's available online and all have different wires/plugs coming out. I don't want to give a stealership $300 for a new one so i would rather wait for a second hand one to come around...

Oh the CDI i have has 2 plugs, and five loose wires. 1 longer 3 wire plug & 2 loose wires to stator. Orange to coil. Shorter 3 wire plug to ?? another plug. And two shorter loose wires (light blue & black/white stripe).

Also any idea where i can get one, or does anyone have one laying around they would like to sell? Any info would be great. Thanks, marc

Well, not too easy to answer this one.
In the XT / Tenere there are two different iginition systems used: CDI and TCI. CDI does not need a battery, TCI does. The 'black boxes' are not interchangeable.
In general, CDI's from one XT will fit another, I do not know about TCI's.
For XT / Tenere I know that you can make fit the CDI from modelnumber 34L to 55W, 1VJ and 3AJ (did it myself). However, the 1VJ and 3AJ types have more wires, some of which should be connected.

If I am not mistaken, your 5Y1 CDI was originally used in a XT550, kickstart model, not needing battery power. So the above numbers MIGHT work. Maybe better to purchase another CDI with the same coding.

I realise this post is a bit misty, but it's all I know.

As I understand the 550 cdi & the 600 cdi's have different timing curves and should not be interchanged. The unknown cdi you describe is for a xt600 with the sidestand shut off switch, it can be modifyed to work on earlier 600 like aukeboss said. You did not mention what model of xt your working on.

Ok, i did some part number research and it appears the CDI from the 82 XT550 and the 89XT600 that i have are exactly the same....5y1-52. 070000-090 2. both made by denso. All wire colors are the same, however two wires that go to the stator are integrated into a five prong plug on the 550, where as on the 600 they are separate. As far as timing curves go, i have no idea. Can't seem to find any info on the subject either.

My next problem is my blinkers/lights. I got the bike running this afternoon and nothing as far as lights & Signals. I have not gotten a chance to read through the manual yet, but i am sure there is an electrical component that got destroyed when the previous owner re-wired the bike incorrectly.?.?.?..

Oh, and by the way the bike runs amazing. Started up 3rd kick after sitting for ???? many years. Changed the oil, adjusted the valves/brakes, and cleaned the carbs. These bikes never cease to amaze me.

As far as which model XT i have...I'm not sure. Didn't know there were different models. Just know it's an 89 Xt600. Both are actually.
