89 XT600 (kick start) Carb issue

Before I rip into the carb again was hoping to get some advice

1989 XT600 kick start, carb stumbles at mid throttle 3500-4 or 5k rpm. Idles great, starts ok, power good low then it stops pulling feels like it wants to pull through (lack of fuel?)
Don't know if this is a common issue on these bikes and forums experience would have me do some obvious checks.
Pulled air filter and that seemed to help a bit with a hiccup i was having seemed to help over all a bit
Choke on only help (didn't eliminate) when cold. Didn't measure butterfly
Back fires on occasion when trying to start, if I screw up
No decel popping

cobra can
stock carb
de snorkled
airbox drilled
87 octane
AF 2 turns out
Running a smaller sprocket rear then stock so I don't know what stock acceleration is.
plug is new
Have not yet done a plug chop
air filter is currently soaking
carb has new o rings and gaskets, float needle

Thanks

If this has the same filter as for the carb on for the 3TB inside you need to pull it out and check! Here you can see filter, the white tip with steel filter http://www.ebay.com/itm/YAMAHA-XT600...ed47c2&vxp=mtr

I don't think I have the screen.

I bought most of my parts from 1989 XT600W Yamaha Motorcycle Parts
the needle valve came with the screen off and it could have been left off or snapped on(which I did). If the screen was plugged it wouldn't go to higher revs and just stall or pop/bog, due to running out of fuel. At steady throttle it would jerk and surge.

To me it sounds like the secondary carb may be out of sinc or opening too soon/late and changing fuel mixure too much. It starts to open at about 1/3 throttle, but doesn't adversely start doing it thing until 1/2-2/3 , technically.
If you want to check it you can turn the screw that sets when the secondary opens. First screw it out 3 or 4 full turns, see if the stumble changes, then turn it back in 6 or7 and repeat. Try to keep track of turns so if needed you can put it back to original place.

That the one with the leaky/broken jet housing right? Again, I'm picking more xt's and parts this Sat and this guy says there is two carb setups( an '85 and '84), I should be able to send you that secondary carb with the rocker cover. It may be a little different but I have an '88 also and will send all parts to change over.

Ill take the carb out and give it some more attention.
I have seen pictures of the screen but on 2 carbs that i have 85 n 89 I don't see the screen. Its possible that po took out. I had these carbs soaking for a day then blew out well also took some guitar string to all jets and hoses. floats left at stock.
But it does do the surge, feels like it needs the fuel.
when i put the air filter back in i'll also bring the AF screw to 3 turns. I'll report back.
