'93 XTZ 660 loses engine power
Recently bought the bike from e-bay for a trip to Norway. All seemed fine (although it is on a Q plate as it has been rebuilt). Took it into local bike mechanic who gave it once over and said it was ok. He suggested that the cam chain and tappets might need adjusting eventually but were ok for the moment.
After riding around for a bit- engine very strong and everything fealt lovely, I thought i would stretch her legs... got up to fifth gear 5000 Revs and about 55/60 mph and the engine loses power. It sounds like it is still turning over but this slowly decreases. Drop down a gear and still no improvement so do this again. Then the rear wheal locks up for 1/2 a second (enough for full pants) and the engine stops completely. Bike rolls to a standstill. I turned the ignition off and then back on and she starts up first time, turns over fine and power is back. Obviously took it much easier. I have repeated the heavy acceleration a few more times to try and see when it is the problem occurs. If acceleration is gentle up to 60 it seems ok but once high revs are reached the same occurs. Only seems to be 5th gear though. Any ideas? cheers merlyn |
Merlyn,
The peterol tank vent could be plugged. Next time you start losing power, crack the filler cap to let soma air in the tank and see if the power comes back. Good luck Steve |
Fuel Starvation
Also check fuel filters, breathers to see if blocked.

Problem averted... just about.
Cheers for the advice guys although the local bike mechanic came through in the end. It was the kick stand kill switch. It was switched off by the vibes and was easily removed.
Also the tacho gear box has begun leaking. Seals changed but still leaks. The gear box socket that the cable goes into is corroded so am ordering another. Unfortunately i have no information as to how old the bike is as the frame and engine numbers have been swapped for DVLA ones. I am hoping that all 3YF engines use the same part. If not was planning to bung the hole with liquid metal (after removing the rotating peg in there) and sacrificing the rev counter. Anyone used liquid metal in this way before or done a similar repair? Fingers crossed for Norway merlyn |
