Aftermarket LARGE petrol tank

Aftermarket LARGE petrol tank

I have been told there are some large after market petrol tanks available for XT600E’s, does anybody have any info on where these can be brought?

Also any advice on which ones are thought to be the most robust would be much appreciated?

Thanks again for you help and advice on this.

Iain.

Hi,

I've used an Acerbis tank on a XT600E, can't remember how many litres it holds but it gives a range of 220 - 250 miles plus reserve.

No problems except the self coloured plastic tank was a very different shade of blue to the rest of the bikes blue bodywork. Also, locking filler cap, which is sold seperatly allows petrol to seep out if you don't leave a good air gap in the top of the tank. The cap that comes with the tank has a breather tube coming vertically out of it, so preventing a tank bab being fitted.

Acerbis make lots of plastic parts for motorcross bikes, so your local MX shop should be able to order you one. However, when we bought ours 5 years ago it was much cheaper to buy from Germany that a local shop in UK, even with shipping costs .

Iain

The Acerbis is 23 litres and extremely tough. I've run my XT600E with one for 2.5 years and I ride trials and trailride - lots of crashes! It's still going strong. My best mileage on a full tank, about 300 miles...

Cheers
Bish

Things like the Tourtank on the back of your bike are forbidden in Desert Rallies. Too much back injuries. And who wants a custom bike tank on his bike?

I used the Acerbis 23 litre tank when i went to Ghana from the UK. I used a set of engine crash bars from Wunderlich, the tank sat well on the top of these and supported it well. Had a few big offs in the sand and it lasted well, no problems. I also bought a locking fuel cap. My opinion its crap, couldnt get it off sometimes, more hassle than its worth. If they want to steal your petrol they will cut the fuel pipe anyway. They are still for sale on the Touratech website. Hope this helps.

Thanks, I'll check it out.

I looked at the tanks on the Touratech website. 23 litres seems a bit paltry. I'm a bit reluctant to spend £200 on a tank that gives me 6 extra litres of capacity (the tank on the XT600E is 17l including reserve) when I could spend a fiver for nearly the same capacity by buying a plastic petrol can from a service station. Doesn't anyone do a tank available in the UK which holds a more useful quantity, like 30 litres?

Hi,

The importer to the UK for Acerbis gear I beleive is Bert Harkins Racing, bert is a legend in the MX field. There is one other company that distrabutes to trade, CI Sport. Bert's web address is http://www.bertharkinsracing.co.uk/ although you are better of calling them. CI sport are in leatherhead surrey try a 118 for the number, they will let you know the nearest dealer to you. Bert sells directly.

I see what you are saying but a larger tank would put alot of weight to the bike, that is why it is a 23L, also you have to consider dimensions a larger tank would mean a taller and or wider tank, would probably get very odd handeling very quickly with all that fuel sloshin around. The tank can only go so low. Personaly and am by no means an expert I would have a 23L and a small jerry can. 200 quid is alot of money for a tank but getting stuck with no fuel could cost you your bike if you have to leave it, your call really.
