The battery in my XTZ660 will not stay charged
 

Hi everyone,

I had the stator replaced in my 95 XTZ660 last year (straight after I brought it); because I drained the battery not starting it properly.
That fixed the problem, until last week when the battery went flat after not riding it for a couple of days. I charged the battery and it ran fine for a couple of day and went flat again. I put a new battery in it and it went flat in less than a day??
I checked the charge across the terminals while it was running; it was not 13.5 to 14v (cheap multimeter) but it was increasing from 11.5 to 12 when I revved the engine.
I suspect it is my reg/rec.

Any advice here would be helpful!

Check its not drawing power with the ignition OFF - may have a slight short somewhere?

Thanks for the reply, no power being drawn with the ignition off.
I have reg/ rec in the post, I should know this weekend if it is too blame.

I'll reply if it is fixed or not.

Reg/ rec not the issue!? the voltage visibly drops across the battery when it is running, but when I turn the ignition off the voltage rose from 9v bake to 12v??
I cleaned the some of the connections, some of them were bad. Something is sucking the power out of the battery?

It has to be a faulty unit, allowing the battery current to short to earth through the rectifier or the regulator.
What checks did you make to determine if there is a drain on the battery when the ignition is off? You need an amp meter ideally, connected between the battery positive terminal and the cable. The reading should be zero. As has been said, it will be interesting to see what a new unit does.

I need to check the regulator wires back to the battery and see if that isn't the issue. I have down loaded a charging system flow chart so I will see what the results are.
I don't know if it is component draining the battery or a short stopping the flow back to the battery.

It's fair to say I am getting frustrated.

It was the stator shorting to earth. The guys recons it was pu in incorrectly last year, but he has managed to save it so no cost. But the wiring harness need a complete re-work costing a lot of money.
So at least I have my bike back.
