Brake pad shims
My rear brake pads arrived this morning and I had a read of the workshop manual before going to the garage and looked at the diagram of all the parts.
When I took the old brake pads out there were no shims behind the pads like in the workshop manual diagram. Parts 12 & 13 caliper shims. So either there were none fitted from new or someone had changed the pads previously and not refitted the shims. Unlikely as it had done just over 5000 miles. If you have changed your rear brake pads on your XT600 I would be interested to hear if they had shims. |
No shims:thumbup1:

No shims on my 03 either.

No shims, but two little spring plates that are a complete b*****d to keep in place if you only have the normal number of adult-sized hands.
Edit: just looked in my manual and the numbers don't correspond with yours, but it shows '15 Shim' as two parts - the spring plate that fits behind the pad, and a shimlooking thing in between the two. Mine only has the spring plate and nothing else, and goes together fine and works. |
Even if shims were originally fitted, many people lose/ditch them and brakes will still be fine. They are usually only fitted to stop brake "squeal".

I was sent a link to an online parts catalogue for an XT600E 4PTB which has been invaluable to me.
But there are a few diffenrences I am finding here and there from my bike to the catalogue. I bought the shims to have a look at. 3TB2582700 and 2KF2582800 I don't have any sqeaking but put them in anyway. |
Have this issue currently on my Suzuki DRZ400e. The old shim has been worn through by the brake pads and cut grooves in the alli brake caliper carrier (can happen with lots of mud/dirt on an enduro bike). This was causing my rear brake to be very tight/jam and wear out pads real fast.
I bought a new carrier, but none of the Suzuki dealers' microfiches have the brake shim as a part listed. My mechanic has ordered me a Kawasaki shim. My brakes are Nissin an hence the same brake/components fits lots of brands of bike. cheers Chris |
i just use copperslip or neverseize on the back of the pads and it works just fine :thumbup1:
