brakes sqeeking
I put new pads on and the brakes sqeek when I am coming to a stop. Now they were doing that before I changed them. Any help would be appreciated 1990 xt600

First try to bed the brakes by doing a few repeated hard stops.
But that probably won't fix it. Most commonly, the brake pads squeak because they vibrate. Your old pads may have had a shim attached to them. Sometimes there's a shim, sometimes there isn't, but if there is, you should use it. And finally, smear some brake grease on the back of the pads. That'll stop them from vibrating. You don't want the grease on the front of the pad or on the rotors, just the back, and it doesn't have to be a lot. Jamie |
They were doing it before and after the change also there was no shim

Good suggestions for disc brake squeal - anyone got similar advice for drum brakes? I've done the usual stuff - cleaned the dust out, chamfered the leading edges, lubricated the cams / pivots and used wet /dry on the linings but the thing still squeals.

My brake maintenance routine which I find this helps my brakes.
1- a thourough cleaning 2- polish up the metal back plate of the brake pad and NOT the pad itself! 3- Use brake pad grease on the back of the now clean metal back plate where the caliper piston presses against 4- LIGHT sanding of the brake pads which I find can 'glaze' a bit 5- Use a brake disk solvent cleaner to clean the disk thoroughly followed by a LIGHT sanding (using sand paper by hand- no power tools!) of the disk itself. 6- Bleed the brakes and/or replace brake fluid if it is time to do so. 7- check brake pad for uneven wear which could mean a warped disk. If so, check disk thickness with digital vernier calipers. some of the above may well work from drum brakes. It's been awhile since I had those. |
