Burning Oil - Help/advice
 

Ok, so my 3aj is burning oil at a rate of about 1litre per 1000kms, what should i look at doing to sort this. It had new rings at the rebuild about 8000kms ago, but burn't oil fron the word go. Any help would be appreciated.

Mine does the same:

1000km = 1 litre of oil.

It's a XTZ660 3YF with 26000 miles on the clock, it doesn't smoke or leak.

It seems to be a common feature of these bikes but I am still a bit worried especially now that I am about to leave for a long trip - it's like having a 2 stroke... keep feeding her oil...

Anybody has a word of consolation???

mine doesn't leak either, it somes a bit on start up and if i whack the throttle open. I'm wondering if its valve stem seals? Could this really use that much oil? As for the long trip, my bike was like this when i left, and i got back yesterday having done 6000 + kms. No change in oil consumption. I've already got a 2 stroke off road bike, I don't really want another.

I had a 1994 XT600e for many years and it was to consume approx. 0.5 l. every 1000kms. This figure remained the same from the time I owned it with 18ooo kms on the clock until the time I sold with more than 85oookms. Heat and highway riding had some increase in this amount. I had friends with the same attitude of their XTs consuming oil but still 1 l. per 1ooo kms seemed a little bit more than usual.

If there is a dramatic change in the way your bike behaves, then you may start worrying. Until then, ride and enjoy whatever you've got.

My '86 tenere burned a lot of oil, especially when doing highway runs. I recently did a top end rebuild and the valve stem seals were really hard and the inlet valve stems had a lot of black gunk on them. Now that the seals have been replaced the oil consumption is minimal. Could be your problem also.

Ok, so I took the top end off the bike today, black crust crap om the piston. The inlet and exhaust valves on one side black and shitty, the others white and crusty. Bore and rings look ok, but I'm gonna measure them tommorrow.

have a look and let me know what you guys think, as the valves are black on one side, I'm leaning toward valve stem seals on that side being crap. The bikes just done 6000kms being used everyday.

I've just done valve guides on my BMW R100. Combustion chamber looked just like yours. I also found my plugs getting very dirty, The build up had a softer oilier kind of look about it than just a normal build up of carbon. There was also oil on the stem and back of the inlet valve - which shouldn't see much filth unless it is coming down the valve guides.
I know it's a different bike, but the symptoms look the same - since I did mine I have virtually zero oil consumption. Since you've stripped down so far, I would fit oil seals anyway if that is normal on your bike. Might be worth a look at the guide wear. My valves were a "rattling good fit", but after new guides they ran smoothly in the guides with no side play.

Sorry - in last post I said there was oil on the back of the inlet valves - I meant considerable build up of burnt on oil.

Thanks Boxer, I'll check the valve guides tomorrow as well. My plug looked like it was burning ok, although I was expecting it to be shitted up. Probably one of those twilight zone things going on.

I've got a 2002 model which we estimate has done around 15000m. I took the exhaust and headers off today and noticed quite a lot of black soot in them. I then stuck my fingers up the exhaust outlet ports and my fingers were black with soot. It doesn't appear to burn any oil, doesn't smoke, starts on the button. I haven't done anything yet, such as check the plug, mixture etc. Can anyone tell me the best method to diagnose the cause? Thanks in advance.

Black soot is normal, dont worry about it.

cumbustionengines dosen't have a 100% clean burn all the time, soo soot will apear.

I'd be willing to Bet that the Valve stem seals are the guilty culprit....
Just got my head back from the machine shop where I had the seals replaced as well as some port polishing done :thumbup1:.....

Mine was using oil @ about the same rate......could always tell when she was low....started hearing more valve noise while sitting @ the signals.:thumbdown:

Have you seen that the recent post, has nothing to do with the OP?

The resnt post states no oil use, and no smoke, just some black soot....
