Carburettor Pipe

Hi, I've got a 94 XT600E, can anyone tell me what the pipe is that comes from the top of the secondary carburettor diaphragm chamber ?
It has a filter built in but the other end is not connected to anything, should it be ? Is it just a breather & if so how does the diaphragm work ?!

Thanks
Ted

don't panic, this is all right.
it is a breather pipe. the aim is to speed up reaction of diaphragm to throttle opening.
it works because under-inflation is above diaphragm (when throttle is open), pipe inlet is below diaphragm.
older carbs (< '90) don't have this pipe.
regards
klaus
