Clicking Head Bearings ???
 

A quick question for all you knowledgable people out there....

The problem - If I dive the nose of my XRZ660 to the limit of the front susspension - just before it hits the limit there is a loud 'click'.

I've tried with a friend to get to the source of this - at first I thiugh it was in a fork - but with close listening it sounds more like the head set bearings ?

Had the front end off the ground but there is NO play at all in the forks or headset.

Any suggestion?

Try lubricating the bearings. Because the engine oil heats up the frame, they tend to dry quickly. Another thing might be the bushes on the springs. Are you still using them with the standard Yammie linear springs or have you got progressive springs already without bushes? If not, have you got a valid reason for it?

No sure how to do this - I've tried to get the top bolt on the yoke undone but it won't shift... Then under the yoke there seams to be 2 spangled nut with a connector between then.... Do I have to loosen them together etc..

Haven't had the forks apart - ever - so assume they are all original parts. If so am I looking at loads of money to replace them?

Also - someone mentioned to me it might be a bent stantion - as i droped it (not whilst riding) and this might have bent one - the sound seems more of a click though than a knock...

If I am greasing the bearings do I need to take it all apart?

this is a real longshot,but do you have renthal type handlebars with the bolt-on cross brace? doesnt matter how tight i do up the bolts, my cross brace gives a loud click every time a lot or force is put on the bars, like picking up the bike or putting all my weight onto the bars.

Hi Dave, is simple : take off the crossbrace!
I've done the Raid de l'Amitié all through Morocco without it, no problem.
And Tony : yes you have to take everything apart to grease the bearings, but it's really necessary. If you still hav the standard springs with bushes, please do yourself a big favour and throw them away. Buy progressive springs like the WP ones, they cost about 90 Euro and really make a big difference. I bet you'll ask yourself why you had never bought them before.
Finally, what is a stantion? If it bends when you drop the bike, then mine will surely be bent too.

yes, thats what i ended up doing fred, hasnt made a bit of difference to the stiffness of the bars.
a stanchion is one fork leg.
