cough and sputter at 3500 rpm

I have a 1988 xt600 and at 3500 rpm and above I get a bad cough, sputter or misfire. It seems worse under load as going up hills. Where should I start to sort out this problem? Thanks Albert

Replace air filter, it will probably be closed by dirt.

It could also be a partially blocked main jet in the carb,or the valve clearances have tightened up,if it isn't the air filter as pointed out above.

Just curious has servicing the air filter improved the sputtering situation? While the filter is the mostlikely cause, there are a few more things to check if you are still having trouble.

I put a new air filter in last weekend but I have not taken it out to try it ill post when I do. This is a new bike for me and I just want to sort out some of its problems. Thanks Albert
