Dead 1vj need another!!!

On the 30 may i was smashed into by an out of control car resulting in broken skull,neck,5 ribs,shoulder,2 sturnem fractures, brain stem death causing partial paralysis in left side, severe trauma resulting in loss of right arm at the elbow.but what now seems more important as im on the mend, totally destroyed my beautiful yam!!!!!!.
so im looking for a very good example of a 1vj if anyone has one.

Sorry to hear of your incident. Good that you've got a "let's get on with it" kinda attitude.

You are probably already aware but just in case, have a look at National Association for Bikers with a Disability - Reg. Charity No: 1040907 they have some great advice/help with adaptions.
I had a chat with a chap once who had lost the use of one arm and I think both legs. He was riding an Aprillia RSV Mille:thumbup1:

I don't know my 1VJs from my YZFs but noticed an add in this week's TBM that might be worth a look if you fancy a rebuild.

Two XT600Z Teneres spares or repair £495 the pair. Somerset.

Thank you.

Reading your list of ailments I was hoping that you were referring to the Yamaha...

I can fully understand why you want another Tenere - but I given the opportunity I would head for the previous model - 55w or 34K (I think)

There's one on ebay right now. Not really a runnere but might make the basis of a bike to rebuild. Currently at £50.

Hi Frontslide,

When I read your first post I thought you were something of a joker given the shocking list of injuries. However, it is clear I was way off line (cynical old b*****d).

I am overwhelmed with admiration for your wish to get back on a bike soonest and wish you the best of luck for finding the right bike and getting it adapted accordingly.

By the way, I had a second take when I saw the second picture of your old bike - is that an old Ford Anglia patrol car in the background?

All the best.

Frontslide,

What a great attitude - I applaud your need to get back on a bike: loads of people will tell you you're nuts: ignore them!!

I damaged all the nerves in my right arm back in 92 (along with a few other injuries...) but was back on 2 wheels as soon as the doctors would let me. I've modded quite a few bikes since then (including a 1VJ Tenere that I still have) as I only have partial use of my right arm. The front brake is easy to move, with a hydraulic clutch master cylinder alongside the clutch lever (be careful with ratios though, you can make it really wooden or too soft if you're not careful.) I have done this mod to all my bikes, except the Guzzis with linked brakes that I can ride on the foot brake only. The throttle will take more thought for you, but again, it is very doable.
I really rate the NABD, as another guy has said: they'll even pay for mods if you can't afford them yourself and apply for a grant.

PM me with a phone number if you want to chat re mods etc. All the best, (though sorry, I want to keep my 1VJ!) Bob

Thank you for that guzzibob but at the mo im not using my phone as a brain stem injury left me with partial paralysis on my left side and its a chore to speak.
I presume you damaged the brachial plexus in your accident? do you still suffer nerve pain? I have all the info from NABD about converting a bike but rather than convert my CCM i want to get another 1vj but this is proving more difficult than i thought! i would love some close up pics of your 1vj if you have any i will pm my email address. Again thanks for your input:thumbup1:

Modded 1VJ

Understood re phones. Yeah the main issue was brachial plexus damage to my right side, though I severed them with the clavicle rather than the more common unplugging from the spinal cord. I've had nerve grafts from my legs (partially successful), and several tendon transfer ops (better) to improve the function of my arm. I do get some nerve pain - usually when I'm tired or bored (so usually at work!!). Compared with some people though it's very minor eg, I've never bothered with a TENS machine.

I'll take some closeups of my control set up and email them to you. In the meantime, here's a shot of my XT in Morocco last March - good luck with finding one.

frontslide 18 Aug 2010 14:16

That look's like it should be in my garage! I didn't realise they did the 1vj in those colours? My plexus maybe removed from spinal cord i have to go for an mri with dye to find out the damage, my clavicle was snapped off my sternum and my shoulder was torn off so im in feckin agony, got the pain clinic on monday so fingers crossed.
It is good you wasn't put off bikes i have had lots of negative feedback from people but i just put it down to ignorance, bikes for 38 years means its a part of me.
Looking forward to pic's.:mchappy:
