yep, there is a pulse gen along with the stator. My guess would be that or the TCI , (source of new one, HPI | Horse Power Ignition) . Those two are the bigger ones that die/fail when hot . Definitely try coil if possible to rule it out.

Check the resistance of the stator both cold and then once it is hot and the bike is cutting out. This pulse gen only sends one signal so I think it would quit entirely, not just idle and pop/backfire like there isn't any advance, or it stumbles trying to advance . The older ones sent 2 and when one quit it would just run off one but run poorly at certain rpms .The TCI does all of that now. Sooooooo.....

Well I have some good news, I bought a new spark plug and found that one of the plug boots from my GS-550 is identical to the XT one. Same length and 10k ohm as well bier I cut an inch off the caltric coil wire and threw it on there.

I was able to ride around the neighborhood (close enough to push home haha) for an hour with no issues. Right off the bat the bike felt much smoother accelerating from idle and the slight hiccuping at idle went away too.

It's too soon to say I fixed it but it's looking good! Hopefully I won't be needing to buy another $170 TCI.

I spent some time Saturday riding around town and the hills and the bike ran like a champ. The "thump" of the exhaust sounds softer and less sharp, healthier overall and the idle is totally smooth without the random hiccup.

Still, I need to ride it more before the taking it on the death race to SF during rush hour.
