dreaded oil pump
Could be an old question, but does the newer, better oil pump fit an '87 1vj? Also, what is the correct oil capacity for the engine? Dipping the oil is a bit of a pallaver (been told various methods of checking, none seem to give me a reading on stick. Oil drains back to engine so quick!) Like old bus though, reminds me of my old xt500....

hello,
yes, you can fit a better oil pump, the older model has 1VJ marked on, the newer model 3AJ. if you cant check your oil level on the dipstick in the tank, than the oil valve is not working properly. the oil valve (can think of the proper name in english now) is a spring with a ball and a seal in the clutch side cover. it controlls the oil coming in from the oil tank into the engine. it is easy to replace. but first check if it is maybe blocked by something. enjoy riding and read your manual about the amount of oil you should fill in. if you dont have a manual, get one. greetings mika from berne ------------------ |
Mica - sorry to come into your thread, but I have a rapid ticking noise at clutch side of my engine for about 20 sec after start up, and after bike has stood for a while. Could it be coming from this valve? Perhaps a blockage, or all oil draining down back through valve and pump having to send it all back up there?

Thanks Mika. Is this valve to stop it wet-sumping? Is it in the cover or in the crankcase? Are there any other simple improvements using newer components?
Thanks again, Neil |
Hi 1 VJ drivers,
your engine needs more or less 2,6 Liter of oil!!!!! Not 2,0 liter, like Yamaha says!!!! Nice to hear, that there are still some of these bikes alive. Ours are now 20 years old :-) Best wishes from Dubai ------------------ Best wishes :-) RalEva http://www.Motorradnomaden.de around the world on 2 motorcycles The homepage has a translation service!! |
hi boxer,
no, your ticking sound is not caused by this oil valve. cant say where it comes from over the internet. mika |
Hi Nick,
it is in the cover. the valve is a spring, a metal ball and a seal. yes, it causes a wet sump if it does not work properly. check if blocked, if not, than put a new one in. mika |
Hi Ralf,
hey you are still in this luxery appartment, needed a rest after Africa, believe me I can understand that. 2,6 Liter with oilfilter change, I think this is what my manual said (not the original Yamaha one, that I have never seen). enjoy life on the road mika |
hi niel, sorry for calling you nick,
cant think of any other improvements now, using newer model parts. ... maybe changing the air filter box intake to the later 3AJ version. so, that not the hot air over from the engine is sucked in. try to find more in earlier postings in this forum about the air filter box change. or check www.xt600.de and ask Klaus to send you some pictures, when he is back from Jemen. mika |
