Electrics - Ahh!
 

I realy am coming to a blank with things to look for her:

the problem is - Ocassionally - The indicators will flash at twice the speed they should!

1) When it happens it happens to BOTH sides and to BOTH bulbs - so it is not a blown bulb!

2) When it happens it is ONLY when the engine is revving above @2000 RPM i.e. - When the rectifier has an output that charges the battery!

3) If you let the engine idle - it blinks normally then as you pull away and rev the engine to pull away - it starts again!

Correct me if I'm wrong but a flasher unit - the speed of the flash is set by the resistance of the bulbs - ie - when a bulb blows it speeds up! BUT if both bulbs are flashing too fast??? Could it be an earthing problem?

What could possibly be going on???

First of all this is just a SWAG (scientific wild a.. guess) It could be a ground problem, but also check to see if your voltage regulator is working. If you have ever had a low batt on a vehicle you will notice the blinkers blink slow, so if they are going very fast I am thinking too much power, that leads me to voltage regulator. Good luck. I hate electrical problems with a passion.

when an indicator bulb blows then the survivor and the instrument light will stay on, ie not flash.this is because the current flow through only one bulb is not enough to heat up the spring in the flasher unit so it doesnt break the connection. this is to let you know the bulbs gone.

trust me, i got some aftermarket indicators that are not up to the vibration of a big single cylinder bike and ive had 11 new bulbs so far, in 3 weeks. and yes, i do have new indicators coming in the post!!

I've had this problem on my Africa Twin. I'd fitted an aftermarket flasher relay unit and it was fine until I started travelling at motorway speeds. The indicators used to speed up quite embarrasingly.

When I coughed up for a Honda unit the problem went away. Just cheap build quality I suppose.
