First new bike! Some kind of frankenstein.. HELP!! :)

So basically i'm a new guy to the whole motorcycle world... and what would be a better start than buying a bike, non operational, and not even getting exactly the bike you bought...
I could be pissed!
But am actually excited :D i want to learn about it, how to fix it... basically everything i can....

So i am asking you, my whole new familiy to give me a hand
So maybe some day this lady can drive again :)

Eough of the sweet talk!

So far i figured that i have 1vj frame...
On that frame is 3aj motor...
I also got plasticks and headlights from 3aj which dont fit on 1vj... about taillights i'm not sure...
I think the rear brakes arent original..
Other than that i'm not sure.

I drove the bike a couple of times... first time it started with a starter spray....
Then i got it home them it didnt start right away... so i noticed it flushes with gasoline the spark plug.. so i cleaned it...also the gas tank was leaking so i improvised another just for repairs... somehow it went for a ride but everytime it turned of it had problems getting it to work again...

Oh yeah and of course wiring is shit so i have to do it kickstarter way and my leg is already good for vacation...

So spark is good suposedly... compression is also good suposedly...
I'm a total noob, definitely, and today i will try to check the carburetor with the company of a friend of mine who is less if a noob.

If anyone has any suggestion or thoughts you are MORE than welcome....

Lets get this thing back on the road!!!:scooter::mchappy::funmeteryes:

Photos incoming!

Thanks!

Matej

very nice bike and the rear brake is original! yee-aah! :D
how much you paid for it? (in euros)

the first motorcycle I got in 1979 was a 40 year old, British Army, WWII Ariel 350, so this is almost like a new one....

Still have it by the way :)

Hi turboguzzi!

I paid 700€...

Is it much? I dont know :)

And also one question if you know maybe.... i'm taking the carb apart and the primary jet needle there are 5 grooves with a washer of sorts around one of then... do you know in which groove it should be?

Thanks!!

turboguzzi 4 Jun 2020 21:02

Ouch, thats not cheap for the condition....so at 700 euro, does it at least have also paper work and a number plate?

Now, let me tell you a little story i read in "classic bike" magazine, some 40 years ago, when i was just starting, it is still true....

to restore a bike you need three elements

1. skills, 2. time, 3. money.
Sounds like you have a lot of time,

Not so sure about your money and technical skills, hope you have them too..

you can compensate a bit if you are lacking an element with the other two, but not completely

I am afraid that this bike will require A LOT of money and skills to put right and eventually, it will be cheaper for you to buy a good running bike. in italy a decent XT600 is 1500 euro. You will easily spend another 700 just fixing yours...

I think this is a good bike to keep as a spares bike and learn how to work on it, but from the condition I see, it will be a very big and expensive effort to make it run right.

As for the needle, if its the one from the slide carburator (left), then i would leave it where it is now.

First, download the manual, all the specs (also for the carbuator) are there.

Before you try to start the motor, change oil and filter. dirty old oil will ruin the motor.

Good luck, you are going to need it with that bike :)

IVJ`s had drum brakes, that`s got a 3AJ rear end (disc).

Whats the engine number? (right hand side behind exhaust on the block) 1VJ or 3AJ?

Mezo.

turboguzzi 5 Jun 2020 08:08

Well, I thought that from the appalling condition of the bike, it was pretty obvious written tongue in cheek :)

seems irony did not got through

There is so much work to do there, specially for a total beginner, that i really feel for our new friend....

Well that sounds fantastic! :/

I have some thinking to do now...

I have the manual, i took apart the carb and reassembled it and it still doesnt start... is it possible that it doesnt because of the float? Or the float doesnt have such a strong effect on starting?
Alsi the adjusting jet? Or maybe decompressor? Can either of these three prevent it completly from starting?
I was till 4 am in the garage yesterday...

I have time, knowledge and money as yoi figured not so much....

Bummer... aaa!!!!

Mezo.

It says 3AJ on the side of the motor

zimski 5 Jun 2020 12:34

Oh yeah and turboguzzi,

No i didn't get the paperwork and plates..

Should i just take it back? :/
:/

:(:funmeterno:doh

Not talking about the casting number im talking about the one that is STAMPED in to the block, it will start with either 1VJ or 3AJ followed by a bunch of numbers.

If you don`t have any paperwork or registration & you are able to return it, return it.

Mezo.

zimski 5 Jun 2020 13:58

Yes... 0n the block there is a *3AJ - 006800*
I'm dissapointed... if i could just get it to start... because it ran already..

!!!!!

mossproof 5 Jun 2020 17:25

You know it runs, because you have heard it. So you know it has spark and compression. Bikes that stand idle for a long time always have carb problems unless they were drained. Are the carbs right for the engine that is fitted, and are they absolutely clean (all the jets, fuelways, any internal filters...)? Also, check the cam timing - this can make it hard to start, but I think the carbs are your problem.
If the starter spins when you attach 12v directly to it, you can bodge a system to bypass all the other switchgear (Use thick wire!) and touch one end of a cable to the battery. Be careful - it will spark, you need to be firm for a good contact, and don't have any open fuel cans close by!
(You have checked the cutout switch on the handlebars is in the "run" position??)

If you fancy a challenge, keep going, if not, try to return it. If all the parts are there, time will be your biggest investment!

Good luck!

Mezo 5 Jun 2020 23:31

Dont forget to check that the float needle valve filter is not blocked.

turboguzzi 6 Jun 2020 05:32

making that bike run well again is going to take a big effort as you start to understand....

if at the end of months of work and even more euros, you will end up with a bike that has no papers and can only be used in empty fields, I would very strongly suggest to you to take it to the seller and try to get your money back.

Im pretty sure you can get a better deal for 700 - 1000 euro, a bike that has been in normal use and that you will enjoy on the road rather than just struggle in the garage for a long time.

@moosproof - that thing is kickstart only, no starter.....also disagree that it's solvable mainly with time, IMHO you are misleading the guy

zimski 6 Jun 2020 11:53

@moosproof i think the carbs are right... i've cleaned everything.. still no juice... i'm going to se somebody to day to try and bring it back to life... thanks for all advice..

@mezo Yes. The filter is clean or should i say should be clean unless it somehow got dirty overnight since i cleaned it... frankly i have no clue.
The thing is as moosproof said i know it ran... but now it doesnt even start.. it doesnt even try... i get no combustion...

@turboguzzi
I'm starting to understand that yes... and i am seriously considering trying to return it but a part of me want to bring it to life back again...
Its just i'm lacking the knowledge... because if its carburator then i dont know... i took it apart 3 times already...
There's something i'm missing (apart from years of experience)..
I just want it to run... i dont plan to take it to the road...
Right now i just want it to run...
Aaaa!!!! :D

You all must have been here probably a lot of times before... but its first for me and i'm hooked...

There must be some stone age way to diagnose and repair it i just dont know it

But anyways! Thank you all for your advice and your time so far!
It gives me a nice feeling!

Cheers

zimski 6 Jun 2020 12:50

!!!!!!!!!

It started!!!! Twice!!!!

And now again!!!! Just as i am writing!!!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !

Yes!!!!

zimski 6 Jun 2020 13:35

Update...

So far it works!!! Yes!!!
Spark plug is black so i assume i have to rich mixture?
Breaks are basically nonexistent...

But it runs!

Good for a total noob :D

Drive long and prosper :D HA!!!!!!!

zimski 7 Jun 2020 07:01

Now for the next step....

The brakes, so i can test it :)

Will upload the progress!

Cheers

mossproof 7 Jun 2020 12:16

Well done Zimski!
If you want to get rid of it but can't return it, it should at least be easier to sell.

@ Turboguzzi: Sure looks like a starter motor to me just there under the carb.

turboguzzi 7 Jun 2020 14:11

you are right moss, seen the kick on the other side... rembered his leg was getting tired

zimski, now that you have you nice win against the engine, think again where are you going to ride that thing with no number plate....

one thing is to make an engine start, another is to make the bike road worthy.... and surely dont test the bike without working brakes.

Still i would consider returning it, even if you get back from the guy not the full 700.

let talk a few months from now, youll see why i am saying this :)

in any case, kudos for getting it started

I'm back senseis! :) plural of sensei :D

So...

I'm still extatic about the fact that it runs!!!
Me and my friend (on the picture) took the brakes apart, and went to order new brake pads for the front brakes... for the rear brakes i have to find new (used) master cylinder which i'm going to try my luck in italy in a junkyard for cars and stuff...

I learned how to renew brakes, bleed and reverse bleed brakes... i learned that if i heat old copper washers and then dunk them in water i can use them again etc.. small little things but i love it!!!!

And also my wish is to make electric start work because kickstarting is brutal... it almost took my leg off a couple of times... maybe i did something wrong... about this i would definitely appreciate some thoughts :)

Other than that,

Drive long and prosper!

Thank you all for words of wisdom and your attention... :)

turboguzzi 8 Jun 2020 23:32

what you did to the copper washers is called annealing, just make sure they dont have steps in them from over-tightening otherwise they will leak.

in order to save your leg, check/adjust your de-compressor system according to the manual.

zimski 9 Jun 2020 07:05

Thank you turboguzzi!!

I will most definitely check decompressor!

zimski 16 Jun 2020 17:50

Its me again...
After a couple of days of rest (tooth extraxtion back in action)

Still waiting on brake pads, gaskets, fuel petcocks,
Rear brake master cylinder...

Fuel tank is repaired... so its going on...

Now i have the next challenge and its already twisting my brains...

I want to wire el ignition.. i bought a battery... i dont have ligjts yet, no horn no nothing...

I found mezzo's wiring diagram but its too much for now...

Can anybody advise me how to simply connect just so i can start with start button?

Does anybody know amy great videos or step by step instructions?
How should i get to it?

Of course a total noob... but will get through this also...

So please! Any advice much appreciated!!! :D

Drive long and prosper!

zimski 16 Jun 2020 18:39

I found it... "bare bones" wiring should do the trick for starters...
?
:)

turboguzzi 16 Jun 2020 19:12

just use emergency cables and feed plus 12V to the wire of the starter motor and minus to the frame of the bike.

be careful that you dont have fuel dripping on something, because it will make some sparks.
