Foam filter on 600E
Hi all,
I know this has been mentioned before, but does anyone have any experience of using a foam air cleaner element in the standard air box of a XT600E ? If so I would really appreciate it if you could post how it worked for you and if you needed to re-jet the carb's etc Thanks Mark |

I bought a unifilter for my XT ( www.unifilter.com.au ) and haven't looked back since. The factory paper filter used to let through lots of fine dust, but nothing appears to get through the oiled foam filter that I have now. You need to clean and re-oil them regularly, obviously the more dirt riding you do the more often it will need cleaning. No re-jetting is required. Mine cost me roughly $90 australian. The cleaning fluid and filter oil set me back another $40, but I now have enough to last me for years.... They are expensive to buy compared to a standard paper filter, but they will pay for themselves quite quickly as they are re-usable. I also use an oiled foam filter in my car. I highly reccomend them.... Dan. |

Is the foam easily seperatable from it's frame so that a spare foam element could be carried without having it on the frame, so making it easier to pack? Mark |
No drama's at all.
To answer your questions, Yes and Yes! As you already know, the foam filter is held in shape by a mesh frame. All you have to do is pull the foam filter over the frame and then insert it into the airbox exactly as you would install the original paper type filter. It takes no more than 20 seconds or so. Carrying a spare filter (without a frame) would be a great idea if you plan on doing any sort of long distance dirt riding. It will fold down to practically nothing, so you don't need to worry about it taking up much space. The kit also comes with a pre-filter. It goes in place of the duct that sits on top of your airbox (under the seat) and faces backwards. 4 screws to remove the duct and then the prefilter (which has a moulded rubber surround) just slots into place. The pre-filter should also be oiled. It's there to filter out the big chunks before the main filter inside the airbox. Hope this helps, Dan. |
