Frame and Engine Numbers? Version Information?
It's my understanding from various articles that Frame Numbers Start with the model version :?:
so: they begin 3AJ or 4AJ etc. Unfortunately my Frame and Engine Numbers start: XTZ0018** Both the same. Does the XTZ have a model number? What ones were they? What differences are there? From my knowledge - there were two version made - with a change happening about 1990?! All this only came about as I was trying to replace a front fairing - the bike is registered in 1996 but the colours are for a supposed 1992/1993 bike with Green (mine) not being made in 1996 - 2 version of Blue instead.... Should any of this make a difference in the long run when ordering parts - were there subtle changes apart from colours... Any finally - Does anyone know about a company called Five Star - Make engine bars and Centre Stands etc. Reason being - I'm looking for a centre stand and the only other ones I've seen are the SW-Moto (?) and Motad (?) varieties - these seem to be temporary fitting ones - clamping to the frame rather than bolting onto it! Many thanks in advance. Tony. |
Tony,
See an earlier post on Centre Stands: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/ubb...ML/000065.html JFMotorsport's WebShop is called Five Stars. My 3AJ has 3AJ as the frame and engine prefix. I would like to know the difference between a Series 1 3AJ (which I have) and a Series 2. A longer Oil Cooler is fitted to the later, and (not confirmed) the gearing may well be different - my S1 appears to have the earlier 1VT sprocket & chain sizes to those advertised (as XT660 Tenere, and I guess fitted to the S2). If you go to the Swiss Tenere Owner's Club website, you will find a bit of a history on the Tenere': http://www.tenere.ch/english/eindex.html
This won't answer all your questions, but will give you a starting point. Geoff |
@tony:
never heard about such a frame/engine number. xtz means 'tenere' (but which is build only up to 1990). could you please describe your bike or try to identify the model using the link above. @geoff: 3AJ with 15/40 secondary ratio has a primary ratio of 31/74 (this is what you called 'series 1'). 'series 2' has secondary ratio 15/45 and primary ratio 34/71. 5th gear ratio is also different. the engine is equipped with an additional oil pipe from oil filter housing to crankcase/gearbox. clutch is -of course- different. regards klaus |
The bike I have is:
http://homepages.solis.co.uk/~rider/xtz6602.gif This appears to be exactly the same. Mine is registered in 1996 (UK Licencse Plate). I beleive as I said earlier though that these colours were only available on the '93 bike? Thanks in advance for any help, Tony. PS: What are the two version? ie, 3AJ etc. [This message has been edited by Tony Robson (edited 09 January 2003).] |
oh, we talk about xtz660?
sorry my friend, i'm not familiar with the model codes of xtz660. this bike, although named tenere, is completly different from earlier teneres / xt600 like 3AJ. maybe d.l. can help? regards klaus |
Tony,
You seem to be getting a little confused, 3AJ S1 & S2 refer to the 600 tenere and you appear to have the 660 tenere,check out this link to find out more. www.tenere.ch/english/etenerestory.html#Top [This message has been edited by GRIFF (edited 10 January 2003).] |

THE XTZ660 There were different versions made - changed at least once. I'm wondering about the frame number - XTZ0018** (and engine) not begining with model letter. eg: 4MY-0018** Which is what I'd expect to see. The XTZ660 does have model codes - I think 4MY is one of them BUT I am not sure and thus wondering if anyone has info on these codes. [3AJ was quoted as an example of the codes I refer to.] What are the differences? What codes are they? Any help much appreciated.. Hi Tony
Your bike is 96 or later. This colour (vdbm3) was only available from 96 onwards (the second year of twin lamp 660) You will have dates of manufacture on your wheel rims and brake hoses - month/year (ie now would be 01 03) you will find this between the rim size and "DOT". The strange frame no probably means it is stolen recovered or imported without?? a frame no and then registered with the new number - can happen, seen it before. Order parts according to the dates you find. If the bike has any bad UK history HPI information would be able to tell you. David Lambeth. Many thanks people for all your help - think I've finally got to the bottom of it.
Hope all the part's I've ordered fit and the bike's back on the road again soon. thanks again. T. |
